I purchased a new Vortex CDI for my 450. You can buy this from Honda of St John's for $400.00 They are in Portland, Oregon 503-286-8817. This thing is great!! You have 10 different settings for traction control. It has a thumb adjustment switch that you mount on the handle bars on the left side. It gets a little tight when you have hand guards and the hot start, but you just have to move some things around a little. It took around 5 minutes to install. Yes, they include all of the hardware. Plug in and go. For testing and adjustment you leave your hood off. I left my on one setting. It takes are R's from 9,800 to 11,500 rpm. You can not believe the difference. I have a HRC kit, FMF ti 4 series exhaust and now the Vortex. I run MX and XC. I used to start in second on MX running a 13-38 set-up. I think I could easly start in 3rd. I am going to try going back to a 14-38 for MX and XC. I did not have time to put my RAZAR 2's on and see but the way this things pulls I am sure starting in second with 20's on is no problem. I had no problems smoking the CRF's all weekend long out of the starts. And the YFZ's had no chance. I was worried about spending the $400 but it is worth it. I will update on the XC set-up this weekend. By the way it is $320 less than Duncan racing. And Bob at St Johns is getting another shipment this week!

I am not sure.. Duncan is the only person allowed to sell these things in the U.S. The guy at Honda of St John's purchases these thru Duncan. Maybe try Duncan's web-site. I have been screwing around with the settings. You adujust all different ranges. It seems like you have a 6th gear on the top end on some settings. I am using the #1 setting This thing rips out of the turns and the mid is awesome. Now this things hits like a YFZ...

We sell the vortex cdi also but as you know they are on backorder for a week or so. Quadjeff are you trying to say that retail on the cdi is $720?

[i]And to think I was going to spend almost $800 on a new crf wiring system[/B]

He was talking about an entire new wiring system for $800...

Sounds like this Vortez CDI is a must. Thanks for the review.

Yeah. The wiring system for the CRF450 so he could use the CDI from the bike which has a much higher rev limit then the 450R.

The comment I was questioning is quadjeff said in his first post he paid$400 for the vortex cdi and later in his firts post he stated that was $320 less than Duncan racing.

Yes, Duncan was selling the CDI kit for $720. I paid $400 from St Johns. That price from Duncan was when they first came out. Supply and deman i guess.

SO WOULD I BE CORRECT IN SAYING THAT ALL THIS THING DOES IS RAISE THE REV LIMIT??? DOES IT CHANGE TIMING ADVANCE OR ANYTHING? I AM CONFUSED AND WILL OPENLY ADMIT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT!

Here is a little info. The major problem with TRX 450R is the rev-limiter. The motor is designed to rev to 11,500 rpm's. To me this was the most obvioius improvement I have done to my 450.

Vortex Performance - Inventors of the Dual Curve CDI lead the way again with X10 CDI the smallest and most Powerful Programmable CDI’s available. The X10 CDI allows the user to select up to 10 different power modes as easily as adjusting clickers on your suspension. With the advent of X10 Technology the X10 CDI can be programmed with up to 10 Hi Resolution 3D Maps. This give the user the option to select from a range of power settings and customise the engines power delivery to suit a variety of riders styles, different track conditions, fuel octane levels or engine configurations.

- As with the Dual Curve CDI the X10 CDI also allows the rider to change power modes dynamically via a Handlebar Switch.

- When configured for Auto Swap Maps (ASM)* the X10 CDI will swap from a Start to Race Map automatically. Aimed at maximising the chances of a holeshot in motocross the X10 CDI can be set up with a Start map to help the rider get the jump out of the gate then swap to a Race map for maximum power when exiting the first turn and beyond.

- When configured for Gear Selected Maps (GSM)* the X10 CDI can detect which gear the engine is in and assign the best ignition timing map for maximum torque and power in each gear. This feature can also work in conjunction with the Handlebar Switch to have 2 maps per gear for up to 6 gears selected.

From Mild to Wild the possibilities are endless with the X10 CDI

- With the optional Speed Shifter and when setup in conjunction with a gear lever switch the X10 CDI cuts the spark for mere milliseconds to allows smooth change gears under full load without using the clutch. The result is the fastest possible gear changes off the start to the first corner. An additional benifit is reduced gearbox where under full load shifting. (note:gear lever actuation switch still under development)

All Vortex CDI’s are factory programmed with Performance Maps developed through dyno and track testing exclusively with our network of technical support centres and top race teams worldwide.

Key Features
Up to 10 selectable power settings via X10 Switch
Instant Plug in Performance (replaces standard CDI with no mods to wiring required)
Handlebar Switch for Dynamic Map Selection
50% Smaller for weight saving and ease of mounting
Rubber Mounting Boot + Brackets supplied (where required)
V-Boost - Internal Voltage Boost Circuit for maximising Spark Energy across the entire rev range
Power Jet Control - Multiple On / Off
Rev Limiter (where required)
Built in coms port for direct connection to a PC.
Race Proven Reliability

How water proof is it? I race XC and can't afford a DNF due to fair weather parts.

quadjeff
08-12-2004, 01:26 PM
The box only has one area the "Might have water problem" It is where you adjust the number setting but it has a rubber cap. They also recommend you mount it upside down so water does not enter. Doug Echiner runs this and we have raced some really muddy we stuff and had no problems.

Sounds like a great product but there is one thing I am a little confused about, you were saying there are 10 different power modes, is each powermode (ex: 1 = 9,800rpm; 2 = 10,000rpm) raise the rpm more and more, or are you able to make it so you have great all around power some times, or all topend if your racing, and then all bottem end if your trail riding?

quadjeff
08-12-2004, 04:01 PM
Sorry, there are 10 different traction settings always allowing the bike to rev to 11,500. The different settings change how the bike reacts from the bottom to the mid. I have only screwed with mine a little. They send great directions with the recommended setting for each style, mx, xc, dunes, etc. You just need to find the one that works the best.

Whats the normal rev limit for the 450r? And would it want to float the valves at 11,500 rpm?

lukester720
08-12-2004, 04:24 PM
According to honda the rev limit is 9,800rpms stock. I ordered one of these units a few minutes ago and will tell you all about it once I put it through its paces. They are on backorder right now.

Thanks luke, hey once you get yours and test it out, can you try the dune setting and tell me what kind of power difference it's giving you? That might be one of my first mods. Any pictures of the handle bar set up?

Hey guys,

I have been riding with the new vortex and found this out. On power setting X10 I am using the setting number 5. This kicks butt. When I am off the MX track and out rolling high speed roads and whoops I switch this to 1 on the thumb switch and it is good all around. Still messing around and waiting for a motor work from DASA. Same set-up as Joe Byrds. This was a really good investment. Let me know what you guys figure out.

Does this unit come pre programmed for all ten settings? And how easy is the software to use to change the settings? Does it have base timing maps to work with or do you have to generate your own? I went to there website and these are the questions I couldn't get answered. If someone is using this unit please let me know how there software works. Thanks!
