View Full Version : Fouled plugs anyone??

I had my 400 serviced about two months ago and haven't been ridding all that much since. My 400 fouled a plug and when I took it out it was black, but not oily. It has a White Brothers slip on and K&N filter and jet kit. It's been about 40-45 degrees when I have been ridding, could the colder temp have caused this?...becasue we all know the 400's don't like to start when it's cold.

I don't think its any big deal. Mine and my buddys fouls them regularly. One guy that rides with us got a new 400, it fouled a plug on the second ride. I wouldn't worry about it.

You have a jetting problem. you're running rich. What main jet are you running???
Also you might want to bump up the pilot jet to 40 or 42 for cold wheather starting it helps out a lot:D

Just leave it alone, its cold. Fouling plugs is pretty common.

This may sound funny, but when I lived back in WI we used to use an electric blanket to warm the bike up in the garage before riding.. I had a 250X which was a pig to start also, but the blanket helped a ton. We wraped it around the bike and made sure it was touching the engine and sides of the engine, and when we were ready to go later (2hours or so) the bike would start right up. Just an idea but it works, and your seat is warm..:p

Well I have the same problem going on also, What mods do you have to your airbox? I have been running 4 - 1" holes with Uni vents in my lid and it's running rich. Plug would be black not wet. I rode with my lid off this past weekend around 34 miles and stopped to check my plug and it was on the white side. Im just going to put 2 more Uni vents in my lid and see if it leans out any. I have a 152 main jet and a 40 piolit jet. Ill ride it this weekend to see if it did lean out any, its got to help. You have a jetting or air box problem!

Yeah, I don't really know if that is "normal" to be fouling a plug that quick. I know my bike is even running a little rich and I haven't fouled a plug in a year and a half!!! Lean that thing out@!!!!

Not sure if there is any truth to this, but my dealer told me that the 400ex's run a little rich out of the factory, and to compound the problem, over pumping the throttle before startup will cause them to foul even quicker. He said this was because the Accelerator Pump on the carb can flood it too easily.

He recommended 2-3 pumps on the throttle, then start it with it fully choked. Seems to work for me.

I'm not a mechanic, so take it as you like, just passing the info along. I've not fouled one since I started doing this. But I carry a few extra plugs just in case :)

Oh, I also started using a different plug than what Honda recommends, I'll post the plug when I get home to verify the number.

The plug I use is a NGK DP7EA-9.
