I just bought a 2001 Dodge diesel with the 5.9L. Does anyone know how many quarts of oil it takes and what is the best kind. Any help would be appreciated, I have always owned gas trucks.

Just read the manual and look at what it requires:huh I'm also looking for a Cummins but the prices they want for used your better off buying new.

No manual.....:rolleyes: Also how often do you replace the fuel filters or do you just drain them every once in a while...

I'm just guessing but I'ld say close to 4 or 5 gallons. Use rotella-t(shell) 15w40 or delvac(mobil)15w40 You want a cg-4 rated oil.

Hey good choice I have the Same truck. I replace my fuel filter every other oil change. And mine takes 16 quarts of oil.

YEAH THEY TAKE A LOT MORE than 4-5 quarts
but 15-40 is the best oil like diesel said
also change your fuel filter/s once evry oil change or every other
btw dont let it run out of fuel or your in trouble

He said 4 or 5 gallons, not quarts. Maybe you should read a little closer, before typing.

If you want good detail on taking care of your diesel engine let me know and I'll let you know what to look for if an oil, how to tell your oil is working properly, what type of filters to use, what gauges you need to have to tell if your performance is up to par, what cetain rated fuel will give you the best performance and why, blah blah blah. If your interested just say so;)
