View Full Version : Help timming a 400ex! HELP!!!

My friend needs it together asap, and i dunno what it consists of egzacly, so i need an in depth explination as to how to time it, like cam chain sprokets, where they line up at, vaulves.... everything. Muchly appritiated!!!;)

1: Crank at TDC
2: cam lobes should be down
3: their should be 2 hashmarks (-) on each side of the cam gear
they should be level with the top of the machined part of the head

And to add to what's said above...

When you install the sprocket and line up the two hash marks with the top of the head, there should be another mark on the sprocket (at the bolt hole) pointing straight up.

Also, while aligning the hash marks with the top of the head, stick your finger or something through the tensioner hole to hold just a bit of pressure on the cam chain. If you don't hold a bit of pressure on the cam chain while aligning the sprocket, you'll install it one tooth out of time. After you get the cam sprocket bolted on and the tensioner is installed, put the engine back to TDC on the compression stroke (all cam lobes down) and double check the alignment of the hash marks one more time.
