hey guys i just got my 450r last saturday and only rode 3 times and noticed what appeared to be a stress crack right above the chain guard. the quad has never thrown the chain either.
the service rep said it is probably just a casting mark but to bring it in and they will figure what it is and if it is cracked they will obviously replace it.
p.s. will they replace a bent grab bar. i was practicing willies and stood it up and my damn grab bar bent and cacked in one place. i really wish they would have went with a steel subframe.

thats what im thinking too, maybe you guys should check yours as well just in case. i just dont know how that could happen in 3 rides, i almost want to believe it is a factory defect or something.

i got the same comment on another board from a few people, it wont hurt to get it checked out but i feel very relieved now.
they said once the molds get a lil bit old they leave marks like that and its no big deal and isn't any weaker or anything.
thats a f'n scary site too see on your 6 day old quad though. haha

im paranoid too but more about engine internals b/c I have no idea whats going on in there & if something happened I have no idea what to do. I am pretty good at everything else on the bike though but I guess everyone is.

the only thing you need to know is that the majority of stuff you buy will need to be made to fit haha. just kiddn but i have seen this with dg products and now the ac pro pegs i just got. those things didnt want to line up and i had to drill front hole on the peg out a bit to get it to fit (the hole that the bolt with the spacer goes thru to the motor mount)

She has her masters in metal-allegy from Poly Tech. It's called a biomatic enfusion crack caused from the pot metal in the molten as it was poured into the mold it flashed creating a cold spot therfore creating a weak spot within the region.

If oil don't leak it's probly not a crack, and would only leak when being run, looks like a casting blemish to me.

Seen it several times on all different kinds of cast parts, just a casting blemish. If you start looking at almost any cast aluminum part you'll find at least a small one. Nothing to worry about.

It looks like a casting blemish to me. They are quite common on aluminum castings. Every motor I have been into has some sort of blemish on the aluminum cases.

Ha, I find it strange that people still don't believe you even after you say someone who has a masters in metal-allegy from Poly Tech said it was cracked...

I'd say take it into the shop to get looked at...I'm no expert at metals, so I couldn't say if it's truely cracked or just a casting blemish. But if someone with a masters in metal-allegy says it's cracked...I think I'm going to stick behind them;) .

well i can see both sides. I'm sure the dealership will do what necessary and if they says its just an imperfection so be it but i will havea reciept that will be stored if there are problems down the road.
Also i have no degree but i worked with glass making picture tubes for big screen televisions for the last 8 years. alot of picture tubes had mold marks that both went into and stuck out of the glass. alot of them looked like cracks but were not.
i'm in know way doubting your wife im just saying that a biomatic enfusion crack may have a speck at honda that says if its good or not. this does make me uncomfortable but like i said if they say its ok thats fine because i'll have documentation if it ever gives me a problem..
p.s. i really hope they replace that thing though hahaha

drill a hole in it, then you could see if it goes all the way through. If it doesn't, don't worry about it.
