I have a 88mm JE piston. Just looked up the part # it is a 13:1. The top of it has been modified like the dome was cut down. Has anybody heard of people doing this. There is 1.60 wrote on the top of it. Is it possible that this is how much it was cut down? What I really want to know is if I will be ok running this with xr head gasket and no base? Thanks

Sounds like it may have been fly cut to fit (piston to valve clearence). But where did you get it from? I've heard of sparks having this done to most of his JE pistons. I buddies 13.8:1 piston for his 450R had this done to it and its a JE piston. Hope this helps.

Does cutting the top of the piston raise compression or lower it?

It lowers it.
