if you havent noticed all of the 440 exs that have entered races lately? of course theyre no YFZ or 450R .. but they hang in there.. id say theyre worth it

I race a 400 that has a few things done to it but the motor hasnt been bored..(yet). Im in 2nd at one track and 1st at another and Im not a great rider and ive beat a few 450s so personally i think the 400 can still hang if youre a good rider.

Just an opinion :D

I think it can hang fine for local series. I race B class with mine and hang fine. I beat 450's regularly but it takes more work and less mistakes from me if the 450 rider is equal skill... FOr nationals, I dont think it is too competitive except in the lower classes. I dont know about you guys, but around me, there are still a TON of built ex's at the MX races. I race against as many if not MORE 400ex's than the new 450's still...

I just started racing NEATV on july 25th. it was my first race since i turned 16. Anyway, i ran Open C and 4 sroke C. the kid leading in points is a white 400ex. i haven't talked to him much about his machine because we were side by side each time at the gate. he has works pro series, +2 a arms, axle, tires, rims, hinson quick change clutch cover, white fullbore but idk about his motor. Ill have to find out this weekend. He had pulled holeshots over me on my piped 450. For my first time racing i ended up pulling in 3,2,2,and 7th. when i was in second those two times, he was out front and i could not catch him. 400ex's still have it.

i wouldnt put the 400 down yet. i still think they are very competitive and relys more on the rider than on the quad.the other night at the track i smoked a piped and jetted 450r so power isnt everything unless you know how to use it.i dont think i would bring a 400 to the professional races though cause all the riders are up on there game.(JMO)

It might take a slight bit of tweeking it, here and there but yes a 400 ex can hang. There are a series of kits that can be installed and other options that can be done.
As for motorcross its the rider, the mind set, and if they have what it takes to get the job done.

I recently had a terrible start with a tangle in the first turn of a short moto-X with 6 laps. I made up a half a lap on a Honda 450 and almost 3/4 of a lap on a yamaha to take second. The guy who won it was on a 400ex that was a new 450 kit. My bike is a 400 with a standard bore Hig-Comp. Wiseco. Rev box. High Flow K&N filter. Jetted, and a custom White Bothers Silencer (MOTOR WORK)!
Now suspension is a different story and put most of the win on it. If there is a suspension/steering mod that is out there I have done it.:blah:

Get a YFZ, hands down. I've got a 416ex, it just can't compare to my friends 450 on the MX track, both are stock geometry, I've got aftermarket ZPS shocks, he doesn't.
