If you ride a 400EX in the trails, do you have any problems without having reverse? I am about to purchase a 2000 400EX from a member on this board and I want to be absolutely certain that I won't regret getting a quad that doesn't have reverse. I will be doing a lot of trails riding. Also, in case it matters, I am 5' 11" and I weigh 195 lbs.

hey, i just got my 400ex and took it out on the trails last week for the first time and it was ok with out reverse, but if u pull up to somethin steep, like a small cliff or somethin, it can be a pain in the ***** to have to try and push it back without letting it roll over the end of the drop off, or you could always just jump off of that kind of stuff and hope to land it. but yea it was ok with out reverse, no problems

i also have a 2000 400ex, i ride trail about 25 percent of the time. NO problems here and im 13 so i always put my self in a position where i have to push my self out:D

Cool. How hard is it to push on flat, dry dirt?

And I have another question that is probably really a stupid question: is neutral in between 1st and 2nd like on a dirtbike or is it below 1st like on a utility quad?

4 4
3 or 3
2 2

not to sound like an ***, but if you can figure out how to turn a sport quad around without reverse, or big enough to push it around you dont need to be on one.

i got a 450r and all i ride is trails you learn how to get around it like cutting tight doughnuts or pulling up a little hill and let it roll back you learn plus little things to compensate plus what fun is it if its easy

Is there a typo in this post, because it doesn't make sense. If you're asking whether or not I am big enough to push it, I am. I am about 5' 10" or 5' 11" and I weigh about 195 lbs. I know I can push it, I just wanted to know whether it is that big of a hassle to ride in trails without it.

I've been riding my EX on trails since late '98 and only maybe 2 or 3 times have I actually wished for reverse. Those were times when it was very hot, I was already extremely worn out, and I had wedged the quad into a place I should have been smart enough to avoid.

With a little practice all you need is enough space to spin the back-end around. If you do it right, you can pivot on the front wheels while the back-end does a half donut and you'll be headed back in the direction you came from. On level ground, you can either put your feet down on the ground and push back or push on the back of the front tires and roll yourself back. If there's plenty of hills where you ride, just turn uphill, then let the quad roll back and turn around. In the event that you actually have to lift it, a person your size shouldn't have any problem with it at all.

no typo, just b/c your that size dosent mean you can push it back, you are just making it seem like more of a hassel then it is.

I'm not making a big deal out of it. I don't know how much of a big deal to make out of it, as I have never rode an ATV in the trails before. I have only ridden bikes. The biggest quad I have had a chance to lift to move is a 1998 Suzuki 250 Utility. Thanks guys for the help. I hope to have a 400EX in my garage soon!

I ride a Recon on trails and most of the time when I need to turn around or get stuck on a log or something I get off and pull/push it. Even though the Recon has reverse and all. My friend was making fun of me for it the other day too, lol.:blah:

why do you need revers, just go throug the obstical or suck it up and pull it out, but if you are really stuck you would hope you have a buddy to pull you out. but never go out with out a buddy, period

Riding alone is stupid. I would never do that. I have some riding friends with utility quads that will pull me out of any situation. No problem at all. Thanks for the help!

Riding a 400ex on trails is a bad ideal because i always get mud in my air filter and now ever since i had it rebuilt the ex never sees muddy trails :eek2:

A good friend of mine recently moved to Texas, and while down there bought a Z400. Well, he visited a few weeks ago, but forgot his bike, so I let him borrow one of our spare 400EX's. It was a bone stock quad, except for a good set of tires/wheels and a bar. Anyway, we went on a couple of looong woods rides during the week he was here, and he was impressed with the 400EX. In fact, he said he thought it felt a bit "peppier" than his Z400, and that he only missed NOT having reverse once, but as stuck as he was reverse probably wouldn't have pulled him out anyway.

I've ridden all kinds of stuff through the woods, and in my opinion a 400EX is an EXCELLENT quad for trail riding, especially for beginners. In fact, it's what my little bro cut his teeth on in the woods...
