The 11th National was held in Southwick, MA which is the only GNC National in the New England Area, so on my way up North, I traveled through New York City for the 1st time since September 11, 2001. As I listened to the radio, I heard late breaking news of New York City being the target of another attack and the security levels would be raised for the city and several other cities.

I decided to visit the Statue of Liberty and see for myself how the New York Sky line has changed since that horrible day almost three years ago. I felt strange looking at New York City without the Twin Towers that I remembered as a child. Now, once again, America is under high alert with the anniversary quickly approaching.

The Statue of Liberty was opened yesterday for visitors to get a glimpse inside the huge statue after being closed for years for renovations, and I was glad to hear that they didn't postpone its public opening after the new alerts. We as Americans must continue living our lives and not stop enjoying our freedom because of Fear.

I am Proud to be an American and hopefully one day "Alcada" won't be word heard everyday on the news.

Later the Evening, I finally arrived in Southwick, MA. The only problem, I found was that there wasn't any signs to direct you to the track off the main road into town. I couldn't believe that there wasn't anything at all to direct people to the track that have never been there in the past.

Luckily, I found a person at a gas station to direct me to the track, and once I arrived. I found a very small sign for the track along the road at the end of a long lane that lead to the track behind the woods in the distance.

The Southwick 338 MX track looked very similar to a European style MX course with mostly elevation changes and sweeping turns, but not many jumps at all. The track consist of sand and more sand. The tractors went out early and groomed the sand level and morning rain dampened the track, so we didn't have to worry about any dust.

Admin
08-04-2004, 06:38 AM
I must say that they crew at Southwick did a nice job of leveling out the track, but it sure didn't last long.

Admin

After only a few practices sessions and a couple of Motos the track quickly became a washboard with some deep sand ruts. Many riders found themselves hung up in the ruts if they got off line any, and it became very difficult to pass because the track became one lined.

The sand took it toll on engines as well. Several riders spent Saturday night replacing or fixing their engines after the 1st day of Motos.

Chad Lohr's Father had to fix a blown gasket on his YFZ before he could race on Sunday.

Nac's Racing, Darren's Parents watched the racing action on the hillside sitting in the shade. Jim Naccarato has worked hard to continue where is son, Darren, left off after he passed away with Cancer in 1998, and it is great to have them as part of the ATV Community.

As usual, The Elka Crew, Yann and Patrick, were in attendance to show their support for their riders at the event. Elka is one of the manufacturers that actually takes the time to travel to both the GNC & GNCC events and support their riders. I wish more companies would follow their lead because I think it definitely is a great service, and I know it must influence people to want to buy Elka's when they get their next set of shocks.

Joe Byrd wasn't able to hold off Jason Dunkelberger and Joe dropped backto 11th Place.

Jason Luburgh began putting on a show for the crowd after dropping back to near last place and experiencing engine problems. He decided to make the most of the situation and have fun and entertain the cheering fans:D

With only a few laps to go, Doug Gust continue to keep a nice cushion between him and riders battling behind him for positions. John Natalie Jr. charge began to slow down, which allowed Tim Farr to make the pass and move back into 2nd place with Natalie Jr dropping back to third.

Admin
08-05-2004, 10:16 AM
Tavis Cain didn't give up and repassed Harold Goodman and moved back up to 5th place behind Keith Little in 4th who began to pull away and catch up to Natalie jr.

Admin
08-05-2004, 10:17 AM
Jason Luburgh day was cut short when his YFZ decided it couldn't go anymore and left him sitting as well:(

Jason gave me his opinion of the Southwick Sand!!!

Doug Gust continued his smooth and flawless ride out front and while other riders begain to show signs of fatigue, Doug Gust continued to look fresh.

Admin
08-05-2004, 10:59 AM
With Tim Farr back in 2nd place, he focused on trying to keep his position and seperate himself from the field because their wasn't enough time left to even attempt to try to catch Doug Gust.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:01 AM
You could tell the Keith Little was physically ready the Southwick track as he continued to work his way up toward the front after also passing John Natalie Jr to take over third place. John was begining to slow down and show signs of him tiring as the race wound down to a few laps left.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:02 AM
Tavis Cain now caught up with John Natalie Jr as well and began to put pressure on him.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:03 AM
Harold Goodman continued his run in 6th place without much pressure from Mike Walsh who also continued to run strong in 7th Place.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:04 AM
Dustin Wimmer finally made the pass on Matt White and moved himself up to 8th place behind Mike Walsh.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:05 AM
Joe Byrd remained in 11th place behind Jason Dunkelberger in 10th.

Keith Little continued his run to the front and began to pressure Tim Farr for his 2nd Place Spot.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:08 AM
John Natalie Jr allowed Tavis Cain to make the pass and dropped back to 5th place, which would be enough to hold on to 2nd overall if he could hold off the Harold Goodman.

Doug Gust aired it out for the crowd as he headed for the checkered flag!!!

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:13 AM
Doug crossed the finish line with his 2nd Moto win of the day and 1st Overall, which was his 8th win of the season. Doug Gust has dominated the Pro Class this year on the only LTZ400 in the field, which is totally amazing. Also, he hasn't finished a race less than 2nd overall which also shows his consistency.

The crowd cheered for him as he rode along the track to the podium area.

Keith Little was able to make the pass on Tim Farr and finish the race in 2nd Place. Tim Farr's 450r once again looked to have began to overheat as white smoke is seen in the photo, which probably cost him the position.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:16 AM
An exhausted John Natalie Jr, crossed the finish line in 5th place behind Tavis Cain in 4th. He managed to hold off the fast charging Harold Goodman to retain his 2nd Overall, which left Harold Goodman with an impressive third overall.

Mike Walsh finished the race out in 7th ahead of Dustin Wimmer in 9th and 10th Jason Dunkelberger.

It was awesome to see "The Bee" Goodman up on the Podium after making a comeback this year in the GNC Series. Harold Goodman finished out the weekend (2-6) and looked in excellent shape to handle the rough track as well as he did. This past weekend at the TT race he won the Pro Am Production Race, so I don't know what Curtis Sparks is doing to him, but it sure is working. It will be exciting to see if he can make a repeat apperance at Loretta's.

Admin

In all the Excitement, Harold ended up popping the champagne bottle a little premature which made for a very funny situation. I guess the trophy girl was just a little too much for him:eek2:

"The Ironman" John Natalie Jr. was again was able to tame Southwick, but not in the impressive fashion of last year. Even with his share of mechanical and physical issues, he still never gave up and pulled out an impressive 2nd Overall:macho.

As usual, John Natalie jr. was showing off his pearly whites to the cheering fans around the podium. John commented that he felt like the old guy out there compared to Doug Gust because of the way Doug rode and was still full of energy after the race.

Congratulations John on another Great Finish, and Thanks for showing your support to EXriders.com and all its members.:D

For the 11th time this season, Doug Gust found himself on the Podium. He laughed and smiled at some of the great comments that John Natalie had mentioned which was really cool to watch. Doug Gust is a great racer and person, and it is great to see him having such and incredible year in his late 30's.

I am happy to see everything paying off so well for Team Suzuki after stepping up and supporting Doug Gust in such a big way with a full race crew and not just leaving it up to one man to prepare his machine between motos.

Admin
08-05-2004, 11:34 AM
Doug Gust & John Natalie Jr popped their bottles of champagne and showered down the crowd as Harold Goodman watched.

This was an incredible race to watch, and the 2nd Moto had an incredible amount of passing, which made for an exciting racing action.

I think I saw some pretty odd tires in those pics. I think I saw a set of Razr 2's?!?!?!? I also saw that Farr is running the new 19 inch MX holeshots. I guess that sand really is that bad. I guess I should get the new 19" holeshots, cause I'd bet the sand here in Florida is worse then it is there :macho

doug is a great rider, and in better shape than anyone out there. As for the out dated suzuki, well lets just say that he gets a new bike every other race. And the parts and testing they have in the bike are probably worth more than my house! Its amazing how the team works. There is someone there for every major function of the bike. I am completely jealous! My team has done great but we just dont have the resources that suzuki has. But no excuses Im just goin to have to work harder. Congrats to Doug and Bumblebee!! lATER EVERYONE.

John you are still the "MAN." You have proved alot this year with limited resources and should be very proud considering you have about wrapped up 2nd Overall in such a competitive season without any factory support! Dave Gibson from East Coast ATV stepped in when you mechanic became ill and has done a great job and also should be recognized.

I am extremely proud of your accomplishments this year and your attitude toward the fans and sponsors off the track.

ABSOLUTELY NOT, it is 100% Free to download and possibly can be viewed even with other movie players. The "PRO" Version is $29.95, but the plain QuickTime is FREE. Look for the "Download the free player" Heading on the Page to the Left.
