I have an 03 300ex I changed the front sprocket to a 14 tooth and they said I would have to grind it down a little so I did. all was well until today I was riding and all I heard was a big bang the chain must have been rubbing against the case saver, heated up and broke jamming itself against the motor and snaped the chain scared the crap out of me. It actually bent the bolts that hold it in. Now can I do without one or do I need one?

Sure go without one....and next time your chain makes that bang noise, its going to be your case, not your case saver. Get a new case saver(C&D sells them for pretty cheap) grind it down, get some new bolts, and go riding;)

Your lucky that it didn't crack the case where the bolts thread into it...
