To get rid of the tall 1st gear, how many of you have changed the sprocket on your 450? My fiance prefers to have a shorter 1st gear for hillclimbing, etc. Has it helped to drop down a size or two?

Recommendations please

Our 450 is stock and plans are to keep it that way. Did you like the 13 tooth sprocket?

the 13 was much better, I could put around without killing it all the time :)

will a 12tooth fit?
I want with 22" tires and a 13 tooth. never ran with 20" and 13 tooth.

but it did run with a 22" and 14 tooth and it sucked, switching to the 13 made it like stock agan.

I have 13 tooth from CRF 450 dirt bike on front. I also run 39 tooth rear with 21" paddles. If 13 tooth front is still too tall, I would go bigger on rear sprocket. If you gear it down too much for first, shifting from second through sixth will be quick. Hope this helps.

I use 13 tooth for MX. Quad has only minor mods but I start in second. I run 8 bead locks with maxxis soft compound MX tires.. 6psi. It rips.

No it dont have 6th gear!! :huh And I run stock gearing and I race motocross and havent really had any problems with my stock gearing other than I have to take off in 1st gear...But the if you are gonna be racing a mix of big tracks and small tracks i would say keep the stock gearing....Because I do alright with my stock gearing and the last 3 races have been on a very short track!!

I really love my 13T, it flat out rips! Awesome for MX! To show for how much a pipe, cam, and filter improve the 450R, my X6, HRC cam, and sparks filter (running 190 main) I can bounce up Fifth gear wheelies (no clutch) all day long. . . If it hooks up of course:devil: Time for my MXR holeshots:D

I have a 13t Crf front sprocket. It really wakes it up, make sure you adjust throttle cable too.

I hated my 14 tooth when I fist got on so I bought a 13 tooth & like it at first but that top end was GONE...I went back to the 14 & now feather when I need to & that 13 wont go back on untill I mount these 22" razrs up

I have a 13t and a 12t. If you don't need your high top speed than put a 12t on and shift fast. With the 12t it's crazy how much power I almost don't like the 13t
I bought a new set of paddles for it and only have rode about 10 minutes. I put the 12t on for the extra pulling power. They are Aerospeed 20x11x9, so far so good.
In tight woods the 12t is great, and on long hillclimbs.
All in all riding I like the 13t.

well i am gonna get a 13 tooth sprocket because then when i am on the track i won't have to shift gears maybe. and 1st gear sometimes does suck on hill climbing and the 13 tooth would help out with that too. but if i can at the time when i got to by stuff i am gonna get both sprockets and a chain. i was thinking of going with those new sidewinder sprockets because those are so light. but they cost a lot. but usually when i buy something i want the best of it. so i save up until i get all the money to buy the better part or something.

my 07 had a 13 tooth on it stock so i went to a 12 for the torque and for trails. only way i'll go back to the 13 is if i put a pipe and jet it only problem now is keeping the front end on the ground.:scary:

06's and 07's come with 13 t stock. I have only had mine for two weeks. Was thinking to go to a 12 but I'm starting to get used to it and I have a full HMF exhaust coming in a week , so I 'll see what that does.
