Im soon to be getting a quad, either a 400ex or a z400. And i would really like to get the 400ex but with it being air cooled, and the z400 liquid cooled, that makes me want to turn towards the z400

but the z400 having the weak frame, makes me turn towards the 400ex.

im just wondering if the 400ex bein air cooled and the z400 with frame issues have ever really been a problem? Will the 400ex over heat easily?

I ride a 400ex a lot and i've never had problems with it overheating, if you wanted to go with the z400 you can get the frame guesseted (sp) to strengthin it up. ;)

thx for the quick replies guys, it just seems that everyone says why not pay the extra $500 or so and get a Z

how long would it take for a stock 400ex to overheat from idling or puttin?

Dude, it's hard to even make a 465ex overheat. It would take a stock 400ex forever to overheat.

I have a 416ex setup for mx, I have noticed it will lose alot of power after a few laps from being air cooled. If you are just a casual trail rider it won't be a problem at all. It just depends what your riding style is. If I had to choose from a Z or EX now I would probably go with the Z just because it is liquid cooled.

If i had to choose between the 2 i'd get a Z.

I don't know who your talkin to or what the smokin but you can get 400ex that are alot cheapers than z400s:huh

And It's pretty much inpossible to over heat a stock 400ex

After a few laps on my EX during a race (pretty much WOT whoops and jumps, I noticed it starting to get very tired and the engine is stock with just a slip-on exhaust. I would definately love to have a liquid cooled engine.

ill will be doing mostly trail riding with occasional drag racing for fun at the local strip. should it be fine for just trail riding, not WOT

i ride my 400ex WOT down the trails and i never have a problem with overheating. but then again i do also have air scoops.id prefer to have aircooled over liquid cooled cuz its much simpler and just another thing that cant break or go wrong. also they say they updated the frames on the ltz/kfx but even on the new frames ive seen em bending.:(

i wont say anything about the z's frames bending b/c even mine bent on my brand new honda  ..i also never overheated my 400ex & liquid cooling is a PITA and another thing to break

Jumbo, how did you bend your frame? And where was it at?

So far I haven't had a problem with the liquid cooling on my Banshee, except I can't find out where it's leaking...I think it's a bad line. But I definately know that I wouldn't want an air-cooled Banshee...

It won't be liquid cooled, they would have to totally redesign the engine for that. But it is supposed to have reverse, so it's more appealing to the trail riders that buy the Z/KFX/DVX's.

Well if they put in a reverse they have to redesign the bottom end cause you can't just drop in more gear so they could very easily add a water pump. the bottom wou be the hard part. a new cylinder would be easy to make the head is a little harder but it not much. it would be worth the extra effort from honda.

i think the least they could do is re-design the plastics. I wish the 400's plastic were more agressive lookin like the Z, YFZ, TRX, KFX, etc. The 400ex's plastic kinda role in the front while other agressive quads kinda peak, or form an angle on the front fenders

08-02-2004, 04:34 PM
why try to be like other atv's when its not? i like its plastic...cut them if you dont like them or get aftermarket

08-02-2004, 04:45 PM
i agree with jumbo^. alot of quads all have the pointed front just like the raptor. the z/kfx 400 have the same front design as the raptor and the yfz has like the same thing. honda has all original looking plastics on each of their quads.

If your only trail riding, I would say go with the Z. You probably won't have frame problems unless your hitting huge jumps or hitting a tree at high speed. And you can always gusset the frame anyways.

For some drag racing, the Z is definitly the way to go. I got a 416 in my 400ex with other engine mods and still a little dissapointed with the power output.

Id I did it again, I would have bought a Z.

run southwick with an air cooled quad and see how it does :blah: naah, but i'd much rather have liquid cooling than i would air cooled. its just better all around
