chain

I bought my bike used. I think the previous owner used WD40 on the chain.:huh I put some PJ1 on it twice and needless to say it's a mess. It seems to need a good cleaning and it might be ok. A friend recomended using diesel to aid cutting throught what ever is on this chain. I'm not sure this is the ticket for an o-ring chain. Any advise?

Does diesel gas hurt rubber? I think regular gas does.
