I wanted to ask you guys what oil should look like after it is changed through the viewing glass. I just got my oil changed at my dealer since they were putting in the HRC cam in also, and while there where signs that they changed the motor side (oil residue on drain plug) the oil still looked black. I called up my friend (who is VERY knowledgeable about dirt bike and ATV engines) and he said that the new oil picked up the remnants of the old oil and turned itself black, but it still has the lubracting qualites of new oil. He said there was nothing really to worry about. Just to change it after my next ride (which I will do with HP4M). I believe him but I just want a second opinion. Any thoughts?

im pretty sure your friend told you exactly right...have fun riding. my oil looks new in the clear glass for about 2 minutes..then it looks dirty but I still know its good for awhile

it does not take long for the oil to turn a darker color.
synthetics seem to darken quicker than petro based oils.
and even so the dealer may have only top off the slosh pan.

the service book i have says to kick the bike over with the ignition off for complete rapid draining.

i change the motor side after every ride. it's only a few bucks to do it, not like a deseil motor with 10+ quarts of oil. basically cheap insurance.

Every ride? Wow. The book says 100 hours, which is basically the same as any other gas engine made though I'll change mine a bit more often than that. Plus the way I figure, the more times I pull the drain plug, the more chances I have to forget to tighten it well, cause a leak or get something foreign in through the filler hole. Kind of like the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule.

I change my oil every ride and the filter every other ride.
