Im thinking about buying one of Toms cams but he says they are his own grinds, are they or is he like the rest of these engine builders and just want to make you think that so youll buy his cams.I ride about 40% mx and the rest all around. What would be the best cam to get from him for this. I would like a really strong mid to mid top and strong topend also.Any suggestions on which cam,and if you are running one of them what do you think of it. THANKS for the help.

Don't know about Tom's, but the GTT, Web 450/451, or HRC are very good mid-top cams.

i have a tc mx grind cam... i think my quad has mostly low and mid power with this cam and 406 piston... his cams are new grind cams he takes ur old stock cams taht u send back for the core charge and changes them... they are worth the 205$ if u ask me i love his cam and will never buy anythin but a tc cam!!!!!

So if If I wanted more of a all around his cross country would be the cam to go with, more mid to top.Would that be a good choice.

The XC Cam is more for Bottom, but I think it adds more Power all around. You should be Happy with it.

TC is a damned good engine builder. Thats why he has my motor. He makes his own cams, rods and all that other stuff! Tom is tha chit

Which do you think would be a better cam for all around / mid ,top end cam,the WEB 450/451or the TC cam.

Does anyone have the TC cam specs? The 450/451 is a little soft at the very low rpm's and then comes on like a 2 stroke to provide a very good mid range hit, that keeps pulling hard to the top.

I have, but he - like many others, won't give them out. Just wanted to make a comparison and maybe help out SHOOK. Has anyone bought one of his cams and received a spec (lift/duration....) sheet, or maybe measured one?

They normally dont tell you because they are nothing more than a web 450/451 cam thats what cam all the other engine builders use.LRD, GT thunder,W/B, Trinity, Fischer all of them running 450/451.

When I called TC he told me the Grind Numbers for the XC Cam. I forget what they were though.

Which ones require hardfacing the rockers and new valve springs? I am looking for a straight drop-in. I am between the TC xc cam, GT Thunder cam, or Hot Cam, which makes a stage 1 and 2 and say they use the stock springs. For the xr400,(which have the same specs) it says uses stock springs and rockers. Are the xr and ex rockers the same?
Dave400ex

Well the TC and GT Thunder are Straight Drop-Ins. It sounds like the Hot Cam may need some Mods. I would Call Hot Cam and ask.

Hot cams are available from Dennis Kirk. Its on page 247 in their huge 2002 off road catalog. They are a he!! of a deal...every cam is just $132.95! Plus you don't need to do a core return or anyting like other companies require. I am tempted to call Dennis Kirk's tech line and see what they have to say. They are deffinatly low priced though!

Hey warriorman, I don't wanna be the test rat! I think I am going to call on them. They have a stage 1 and 2. They say 1 gives great mid and top gains and stage 2 is only for closed course or desert. Why would that be? Stage 1 specs: Intake lift~9mm, Intake duration~246, Exhaust lift~9mm, Exhaust duration~246.
Stage 2 specs: Intake lift~8.8mm, Intake duration~254, Exhaust lift~8.6, Exhaust duration~254. How do these numbers compare with other companies, and which stage do you guys think I should go with, especially with my mods.

The list is growing - (slowly). Here's some basic specs collected.
Lift Duration@.050"Lift
Intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust
stock 400EX cam .316 .302 234 238
XR400 .326 .321 240 244
WB All Around .345 .335 240 248
HOT/stg1 .354 .354 244 244
HOT/stg2 .346 .346 254 254
HRC .350 .339 254 256
GT Thunder .350 .345 256 256
WB Track .350 .345 256 256
WEB 450/451 .350 .345 256 256
WEB 479 .378 .378 250 250
The hot cams stage 1 should have the same bottom as an XR with a little more mid & top due to increased lift. The stage 2 is very similar to the Web 450/451(aka GTT-WB Track) or HRC, a little softer bottom w/a strong mid hit and great top. (IMHO)

Hey Mike,

I called Dennis Kirk's tech line and they were pretty helpful. He said to go with the stage one for recreation, because the stage two will have all the power on top most likely. He seemed to think that the stock rockers will work seeing that the xr400 cam says they will work. (BTY, what do you do to hardface rockers?) He told me to try and get in contact with Hot Cams themselves, but I haven't been able to find their site and he didn't have a number for them either. If anyone has the number, let me know. Thanks
