Powdercoating Header??

hey i was thinking about buying a red hmf slip on and i was wondering if pc would hold up on a header?? i dont like how stock its black and rusts as soon as it touches water. Or does anyone know of a heat paint that will hold up to temperatures that hot??

There is a big diffrence between the stock pipe and a hmf. The stock pipe is painted, And the hmf has packing around the inside of the cannister so the heat wont effect it much till the packing burns up.

i know but i want to powdercoat the stock header, im just not sure if itll hold

Best bet for your stock header would be getting it ceramic coated.

yeah i was thinking about that but my dad and his friend pc parts for there cars so id be able to get pc done free :confused:

When you get the powder hot even after you have cured it originally, it gets a lot softer.

We have PC'd a few head pipes in hi temp colors and they just dont seem to hold up well. I would get it ceramic coated if your not satisfied with the stock look.

you can get it cermaic coated in colors as well

the bad part with high temp pc is that they are textured. ive had luck with the smooth black (which is still textured) but not with the silver. the metal must be acid treated or it will eventually peel off

its been holding up pretty good. Once it starts to look bad ill ceramic coat it.

whats acid treating it involve?? would i be able to do it or would i have to pay to get it done?? and sandblasting it wouldnt work?

id have to break out my book to get the proprer chemicals spelled right:p it basically a mild acid solution that removes all grease, and other foriegn chemicals from the metal so proper adhesion can take place between the pc and the metal. i have done them with this treatment, and without.

i recently did the front pipe to my silencer without this treatment, and so far its doing just fine. however that pipe doesnt get as hot as the headpipe will.

the company that does all my jet coating usually places the pipes in thier burn off oven and when they come out it needs nothing except a shot of air to blow off the dust and pc it or coat it

Yep, the silver and black textured high temp powders are not the best for off road applications. I have done mine for about 1 1/2 seasons and the silver is holding up OK.... not the best looking though. Due to their porosity they have a tendency to get stained by the mud/dirt working its way into the texture of the coating.

The best solution is to have them chromed if you are looking for the best look...although it is expensive. Most have great success with the ceramic coating though.
