Does anyone know a remedy for a stiff thumb throttle on an 86 R? Is there anything that can be done without changing throttles? It's opening the stock carb, and just had a new cable put on. Any ideas?

if you sand down the outer edges of the spring(where needle is) it will make it easier to push

I was told to cut 2 loops out of that spring, it helped out alot.

shoot some wd-40 in the cable it sometimes frees up any kind of rust that might be in there

maxima chain wax works great for lubing cables.

May try grinding the spring. Just put a new cable on it.

you can also try a throttle lever from a trx 90, its bent a little different and dosent give you thumb cramp as bad

Try to relube your cable, or get a new one, And cutting down a few loops off of the spring works wonders!!! Probley better than anything!

So to mod the spring, you cut the length of it down, correct? Maybe like 2-4 loops? Is that enough to tell or is it too much?

I'd just grind down the spring a little, take it off of the diameter not the length. JUST BECAREFUL how much you take off. Too much and your spring could break.

I took 3 loops off of my spring, and it works pretty well. I was told not to go any more than 3 though.

I tend to ride heavy on the throttle, usually 3/4 or full constantly. I noticed that the thumb cramping was from trying to keep extemded and the odd grip it made for.I rotated the throttle forward, so that at full throttle I don't need to extend my thumb as much. It feels better for me just because it is in a range where my thumb feels stronger.

I bought an adjustable thumb throttle from James Lucky for my 88R. Problem solved. My original lever wasn't stiff, just uncomfortable. The one from JL works awesome. :D
