Choke and no throttle cold, hotstart and no throttle hot.

do you use the hot start when you choke it.

and how do you use the hot start correctly. i look at the owners manual a lil but i didn't find it. do you hold in the hotstart till it starts. or do you do it some other way.

I have never tried a kickstarter before and when I got my 450r I babyed it a little but what I learned was to just kick it don't be a puss, know when I get ready to ride the engine is cold I will put the choke on and I will stand next to the quad and kick it with my left foot and it starts easily and I walk over and shut the choke off and then finish getting ready.

No throttle, ever.

If the engine is cold, I choke it, one maybe two kicks it starts. I let it run on choke for a few seconds, or until it starts to sputter on choke. I then take it off of ckoke but play with the choke lever in its "free play" stroke area to keep the motor running at a fast idle. Once I do that for thirty seconds or so I use throttle to rev it once or twice then I'm off.

If the engine has been started within the last 30 minutes or so, or is hot I use hot start with no throttle. One kick is all thats needed.

If you've flooded the bike and stalled it the hot start is even handier, since all it does is add air and lean the mix out some.

never had to use throttle if I did it would flood

Cold=Choke+no throttle

Hot=Hot Start+no throttle (Hot is usually within 30 minutes)

Usually if it has been more then a half of an hour no choke no hot start and no throttle

Oh, and kicking it like a 2 stroke will not get you anywhere. . . It is a 4 stroke after all, nice, long, and smooth even kicks, not fast and short. But two kicks most and shes running. And if you tear into the motor to do a cam swap and so on, make sure your decommpresioner is adjusted right, or it will be harder to start

i pull the choke lever, pump the gas twice, and 99% of the time it starts on the first kick. i just let it idle with the choke on for a minute or two and then it runs fine.

When my bike was new, and was stock, it was harder to start, than it is now. In stock form, I always had to use the chocke when it was cold, and it would take a few kicks when it was cold. Since I have added mods, and rejeted the bike starts always with one or two kicks. I don't even have to always use the choke when its cold either. I definately think it is a tad bit lean when its stock.

If its warmed up and on the perfect stroke, it may be possible. But i doubt it. But cold, theres no way.

If you like to wash it stood up on the grab rail, then I suggest you run all fuel out of carb. This is the only time I've noticed any hard starting issuesat all.

yeah sitting kick is no prob specially when your to lazy to stand up and do it all the time

08-09-2004, 10:43 PM
i do the sitting kick now in front of a bunch of people & it freaks them out...the first kick it sometimes starts & when it doesnt they all say "you cant sit down & kick that thing to start",.....then I smile & kick again & they all freak out when it starts & how easy it really is

That is when I have trouble starting mine, when I have killed it... sometimes it will start right up with the hot start and other times I can kick it and kick it ... don't know the trick yet I guess. Was riding in a shallow creek once and got all wet and it died , man I kicked it forever that time..any tricks to starting ? have heard turn key off and kick it over a few times then try to start, tried that and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. All I know is mine can be a bear to start if you have killed it, and it has also died when it has gotten wet twice.
