alot of dune guys use the 85/86 tranny due to a higher 5th and 6th, the mx guys like the 87-89 tranny.

you are right, there are a few 88 big reds around, I know of 2 in austrailia. don't think the 350x and 250r made it past 86, atleast none in current existance, alot of supposed claimed, but all turned out to be 86's sold in 87

fyi-all the R motors were interchangable just the ATC's and early R motors had the higher gear ratio. and also the early ATC cases were black like the later R engine. the 86-87 cases were a silver/metallic paint. also the cylinders were different. the most mjor difference is in the 86 to 88-89 cylinders. the 88-89 had a bridged intake and exhaust whereas the earlier ones did not. also the locking of the gears differ from 85-86 to early 87 and then late 87-89 the gears interlock differently.

plus all R motors are interchangeable with ATC's and TRX'Rs.

87 had the bridged intake port as well. all water cooled 250r engine components are interchangable.Only major differance is the connecting rods 87-89 were longer the the 85-86

I read in a mag that the atc 250r was released in Canada as an 87 model.
