try a 12mm socket...im not too familiar with the 300ex but I think it will be the same as my 400ex & 450r with the 12mm

It's definitely not an allen wrench and it's not a 12mm socket either. The drain plug is located at the bottom of the quad, and you will need a 17mm socket not a 12mm.

Also, a 400ex has 2 drain plugs.

1) a 14mm socket for drain plug located underneath oil tank, and 2) a 17mm socket underneath the shifter to drain oil completely from a 400ex.

There is no allen screw on the side of a 400EX engine to drain the oil.

There is one obvioussly UNDERNEATH, the oil tank. Then, there is one on the left side of the quad engine (if you are sitting on it) right next to the shift lever.

When you change your oil, change the oil filter too.

(How did this shift from 300EX to 400EX oil changes?)

Try looking in your service manual, that will explain to you where everything is to change your oil, and what tools you'll need.
