I have an 87 250r. I have about three grand in it. Would I be crazy to spend about $3500 dollars on it for some elkas, a-arms, and ESR 310 kit. Or would I be better off selling it and buying a new 450r. I am going to try to ride a couple of mx and xc races a year, but mostly I will be just riding on a private track and going to the badlands with friends. What do you guts think?

Thanks!

What kind of HP can I expect out of these two kits with an fmf Fatty pipe?

Which is more ridable?

i cant help you with HP #'s however,

i have owned and riden both a 265, 265 pv and a 310 and a 310 pv and all far exceeded the stock R engine. the PV deffinatley helps smooth out the hit and makes the quad more ridable and may produce a touch more power.

get a 450r if you will have enough $$ to mod it after.... if you dont and the 450 would be stock, then keep the 250r and mod it more.

Mod out yoru 250r and ride it man. The 250r's are almost fully custom quads, and they always catch peoples eyes! about the PV kits, If your not racing alot, i would just go with a 265PV they sorta seem to be alittle bit more reliable. But it is a 2-stroke, and they need a ton more maintnece than any 4-stroke your buddie ride.

have fun on the R man

yeah stick with what you've got, i have a 300cc duncan powervalve and its got the power to beat any 450. if you bought the 450 you would also want to spend the bucks to get it up to par, so id stick with what you have. i also have been wondering what to do, but ive got too much invested to let go, and besides 250rs rule dude!!!

Hell, you can own 2 quads for the price of a new 4 stroke. I keep a Banshee and R around and still cheaper than a YZF450.

Where do you go riding in the black hills?

I could see the advantage of a 4 stroke with some low end grunt for the hills. I do have to admit my fathers 400ex is mellow and can be lugged in comparison to the R. R's are cheap right now, buy another one and enjoy it. My feeling is that you will always long for the hit of a 2 stroke after you get a 4 stroke.

If it were me in my situation, I would put the money into the R....

i was in the same boat i decided to buy a new quad. accually i blew my r up so and got a good deal on a z400 got it loved the 4 stroke power and bought something with more. sold the z and am getting ready to put the r engine back together and sell that. i have always rode 2 strokes but the new 4 strokes ride like 2 strokes and i love the power they have. in my opinion id sell the r but thats just me go ride the 450 and see if you like it

If u ride some 450's, For MX the Yamaha i feel is much better, even though im a die hard honda fan, That power hit on the YFZ is almost like a 2-stroke! run the 250r man

I think you should get a 450r and put the 570 kit in it.:D

Two comments.

First, I would not run the FMF Fatty with an ESR cylinder kit.

The FMF fatty is designed for basic all-around gains on the stock cylinder and stock porting. If you truly want maximum performance, get a pipe dedicated to your porting. If you go with ESR, then I highly recommend also getting the ESR pipe, as the two are perfectly matched for each other.

Second comment, a 250r with a 310PV and a complete aftermarket suspension setup with easily beat a stock 450r. The only drawback would be the 310cc can't race in all the classes that the 450R can. But if you're both running open class, a complete aftermarket 250r will easily beat a stock 450R in just about any type of race, be it flattrack, MX or XC.

Now, if you are willing to spend an extra few thousand on the 450r in suspension and motor upgrades, then the 450r will probably be better in the long run. But then you're talking about $6500 into your 250r vs $9500 into a new 450r (which includes the purchase price)

I have the Same decision to make. I had a 2 stroke dirtbike but I went to quads and got a four stroke, I got a raptor ( Heavy loud piece of crap), but you can't beat the Light, Fast, and Nimble ride of 2 stroke, and if you get larger cylinder and stuff its no gonna wear out that fast anyhow so stick wit the R. plus like one of the other guys said you will miss the raw rush of a hardcore 2-stroke R all the way!!!!!!!!!!!
