Cracked Intake boot [Archive]

Could a cracked intake boot on a 400EX burn the engine up?

Absolutely, you would be now sucking in more air compared to the amount of fuel going into the carb making a LEAN condition which would make it run hot and like you said burn it up! Just replaced my 99' and it was starting to crack but I dont think it had detached from the metal part yet so I got lucky. Good luck.

also, sucking in "unfiltered" air wouldn't be good

Just order a new style plastic boot from service honda. Mine is a 2000 model and my rubber boot was begginning to crack so I simply swapped it out with the new one.

mine is a 99 and i had to replace her. It wasnt that expensive and is a good replacement if urz is cracking.
