hey guys I just got a 450 R last week and I was wondering what size haulers I should get and how many paddles on them the only thing I know for sure is I want an 8 inch rim I was thinking of maybe 21-12-8 8 paddles would this be to much for my bike here are my current mods HRC kit (pretty much just the cam now) Curtis Sparks full exaust Pro design air filter with the lid off. Any input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

21-12-8/8 is an awesome setup for the dunes! My brother is running that exact setup on a stock 450R w/13 tooth front sprocket and runs pretty much side-by-side in drags with my HRC 13T running 20x10x10/8 Haulers. We're both about the same weight and skill level (~20 years riding dunes). I'm kind of gearing limited with my setup but I was originally trying to make 2nd a hill climb gear. It's still too tall so I'm switching to 22-11-8/8's with the 13T still since Rocky Mtn ATV doesn't carry the 21's anymore and I don't want to clutch 1st all the time in the tree trails with a 14T.

Anyway, my brother's setup (21's/13T/stock motor) smoked mine (20's/13T/HRC) on hillclimbs, mostly due to his tirespeed and the extra hook the 8" wheel and wider tires provide. His could accellerate on hills when I just spun to a stop. When I put his tires on mine, there was no comparison to before. Plus, ground clearance is king on the wet sand climbs. All of this testing was with really dry sand, for what it's worth.

My 22's are on order right now. :)

I ordered the 22-11-8 8 paddle today from rocky mountain thanks for the help one more question should I gear one tooth down on the front sproket or do you think ill be able to launch fine in first gear?

I just got my new tires yesterday. :)

Anyway, since I'm already geared down, I'm planning on keeping it. More for reasons of slower trails than the perfect launch. Stock with the knobbies, 1st gear will do close to 35mph! (calculated) Considering that the 22's are taller than stock by at 10% I'd think gearing down is in order. 1 tooth is less than 7% change after all so you'd actually still be geared a little higher than stock. With the 13 tooth, first isn't too slow to climb the steepest stuff, and I'm not sure I'd want any taller of a first gear.

One thing you could do is try it stock, but have a sproket and tools on hand to drop it if you don't like it rather than wasting a weekend unhappy. All things considered, the sprocket is only about $15 (CRF one is the same, fyi).

I have 21X12X8 - 8-paddle extremes and use 13 - 38 gearing. Gearing seems a little high still. Just got 39 tooth rear and will try 13 - 39 next time in sand. Should be perfect with 13-39. 13 tooth is almost a must to launch hard and not burn up clutch.

Let us know how the 13-39 works out for you.

The thing is, if you get TOO low on your gearing, your shifting a whole lot more. Because your gear ratio's are so much shorter. Let us know how it works though.

I tried 13/39 gearing with 21X12X8 Extreme Haulers and it was very good. I could launch really hard but had to shift 2nd through 4th pretty quick. I have HRC kit and Sparks exhaust and filter with no lid. I dropped my main jet to a 185 (HRC kit) and it helped throttle response too. Was running 190 main. Was a little rich. With 13/39, it rips!!! Must try it.
