I heard that shaving you flywheel was an inexpensive but effictive mod. how much do you shave off?

they only left about 3/8 of an inch on the center of the outside of my flywheel and about 1/4 inch deep. makes a differance!

what kind of gains does it give you? top end? hp?

Man I can't remember if its grams or ounces. I wanna say its measured in ounces though.

Basically they shave off anywhere from 4-8 ounces.

The more you shave the faster your engine will rev, but the bad part is the more you take off the easier the bike will stall.

I had 7oz removed from mine and I didn't really notice it stalling easier than it did before.

Some guys just shave off all on one side. We took our time and did our best to try and balance what we shaved off, all the way around the flywheel.

Its a good mod especially if your removing the flywheel already to put a degree key in. Might as well do the cheap mod while you have it apart. It makes a good difference.

No Hp gain, slightly more torque. The main benifit is faster revs. Less rotating mass, so it pulls harder out of corners, or when gas'd at low rpms.

ok so what kind of material is it is it metal? what tool did you use to shave it?

Its steel.

You need a lathe.

You need a shop to do it. Unless you have skills and access to a lathe.

I imagine you could use a dremel, but.... it be all out of wack and probably vibrate like mad once put back in the bike.

so i could go up to abut 8 OZ on my 440 and it should be pretty good without it wanting to stall out all the time?? or could i even go more

?

You can go more. But thats where your getting a little more risky.

I was just saying what I know is safe. Some good engine builder may be able to take 12oz off.

My mechanic did mine. I told him I wanted 9oz off. For some reason, whether he was scared to take more off, or he could only find places to take 7 oz off. I don't know but it came back -7oz.

It was actually his first 400ex flywheel. But hes done a ton of banshee flywheels.

And I really don't know much more.:(

I'm thinking with this, either the guy that lightened the flywheel messed up ... or... when he put it back together, he screwed up the degree key and somethings off.
