Has anyone put a 400EX rear shock on a Z400? Does it work? Could it work? I'm hoping for someone who knows to tell me "HOW" and "WHY" it would or wouldn't be compatible. Or how it may become possible.
Thanks for your time.

Are you talking about a stock 400ex shock?

If a stock shock would work, I would think an aftermarket one should work as well...... Right?

no it won't work... if it would bolt up (which i doubt it would) the linkage would put a differnt force on the shock... the whole geometry is differnt between the 2... it would ride like crap probably

The 400ex and Z400 shocks are the same shock. I dont know if one is longer than the other or not, but like Tommy said, even if the EX shock DID fit, it would need to be rebuilt for the Z rear end since the geometry and linkage are WAY different...

Agreed. OK. What I'm asking is, can I rebuild a 400EX stock rear shock to a dual rate Zero preload set up for the Z. The stock Suzuki shock is described in the manual as "unservicable". I'm hoping to save a few bucks in this way, so I can still squeeze the Elka linkage out of my budget.

Has anyone tried it, I really want to knw too and if a 250r aftermarket shock would work.

the z400 rear shock is rebuildable, im almost 100% positive on that. but even so i believe the stroke is too short to be used with the elka linkage.

It looks like the Elka linkage is designed specifically for use with their rear shock.

Tell you what, send your stock rear shock to Jeff at the Quad shop so he can do a mac daddy kit and match the specs of the Elka Z400 to use with the Elka linkage.

You can have my Elka linkage to save your budget and use the proper set up, instead of getting hurt with the wrong setup.

The Elka linkage just needs a new bearing on the left side.

PM me with your mailing info if you decide to do this.

Yes, rear LTZ shocks can be rebuilt and they can be converted to SSD. However, you must run the Elka shock to work with the Elka linkage.
