Well, I need a 416 kit now, and they will all be run on pump gas. Which brand should my money go to, for power, durability, and value?

thanks

Im sure they are all top quality pistons, but I can only speak from experience. I have always run Wiseco, in my 2 stroke R, and in my current 426 and have never had one problem with them.

go with the JE for sure...ross is the lightest but it isnt as durable as the JE is

from at experince with wiseco on my blaster it was a good running piston no problems nice performence, on my 400 its nice relibile, nice performence, no complants from a wiseco piston, i havent tried any others but thats what i got out of a wiseco piston

Said this before, but Ross is the best. Jim, who developed the Honda pistons for JE moved to Ross a few years ago, took his JE design and improved it according to him (I've spoken with him a handful of times). The Ross piston are a tad lighter than the JE's but Jim claims that there is no loss of strength due to how the metal is distributed (more in the "weak" points of the piston and less where the piston is less stressed) and Ross's forging process. Ross also offers a "tool steel" pin which is both lighter AND stronger than the Wisco and JE pins (I run this optional pin on my setup). Jim also stats that the oil journals are better on the Ross pistons for longer life.

The only downside is that the Ross rings take a bit more work than the JE or Wisco's. The rings require a bit more filling and can be custom setup for different applications (alcohol, blowers, naturally aspirated, etc). They give full instructions on how to file the rings for your application.

All-in-all, Ross is the better product for your $. They really don't cost more than the competition (unless you order the optional tool steel pin for $20-$30 extra). If you do a 416 kit, the Ross comes in a 10.8:1 - perfect for running pump gas while still getting good compression (anything above 11:1, it's recommended that you run race gas). All of the pistons mentioned in this thread are good and will run reliably, Ross just has the slight edge...

i have been told the same thing as quadzilla said. so, i run the ross pistons. my buddy had a wiseco and had no problems. he now has a je. i have a 426 on the way with the lighter pin that quadzilla was talking about. the can make this pin lighter by using a stronger material. is it worth the extra cost?? who knows!

i am not going to say which piston is best because i have not done extensive tests on any of them. you can only go by word of mouth. i have a feeling each person will say the best brand is the brand they run without knowing anything.

oh yeah, i am by no means saying your wrong. look at my bike, i run ross too. i will probably continue to run ross unless i find out for sure that a superior piston is made. :)

Call C&D, our site sponsor. They carry Ross pistons and Cometic gaskets. Get the standard XR thickness for proper compression. Look at the very top for the phone number.

ehhhh, I really REALLY don't like to order from anybody but Nac's.... but Nac's doesnt have Ross Pistons so I guess I'll go with C&D for the piston and gaskets....

As you will soon find out, C&D rocks!

ok, I guess I'll be going with a Ross Piston, but only if it's as reliable as a Wiseco. I've ran Wiseco's for every bike I've owned and they are great. Never hear of a Wiseco messing up. I dont want to get the Ross and blow a hole in it or something.....

most performance shops i talk to actually recommend ross and je over wiseco. C&D is on a little trip. they will still be answering their phones but won't be back to the shop until monday.

Well, I wound up buying a JE 416 piston at 10.8:1 from c&d. My total came out to like $130 after shipping and all... not too bad of a deal.
