I know it sounds stupid, but I may get into a decked out 300ex chassis with a blown motor. Just curious what kind of chore it would be. I like the "throwing around ease" of the 300ex, but would like a bit more power. Suppose I could just build the 300. Just a thought? Anyone?

By the time you get the motor in the shocks will not be right the frame will need beefing up because it can not take the power on and on until you will have spent yourself into a POS. Either build the 300 or take the money you would spend and buy a used 400. Also even though the 300ex is smaller it is right about the same weight as the 400ex so dumping in the 400's motor and you will end up with a quad with 400ex power yet more weight and a suspension that can not take the power.

You could also get stock 400ex suspension and a-arms for cheap and put those on the 300ex, I don't believe the 300ex weighs quite as much as the 400...so I think if you have the spare 300ex frame, and you have a 400 engine, then why not do it?
Also getting your frame gussetted is not hard...any shop with a welder could do it for you, as long as they knew their stuff. Just get where the shocks mount, engines mounts, etc...high stress places like that. Besides, you'd have to have custom mounts made anyway...

In my opinion, it's not worth the time and money do such a thing when you can buy 400ex's for next to nothing these days..
The 300ex's wieghs 377lbs and have cheaper and heavier parts....if you were to stay with the 300, since the motor is blown, i would just rebuild it to a 330 with a high compression piston and cam. This would be cheeper than buying a 400ex motor and doing the mods it would take to put it in.and this way you will still have reverse and the power of a stock 400ex motor.

Good point...a 300ex weighs 377?? Wow, didn't know they weighed that much. Well, the only advantage I saw to putting the 400ex engine into the 300ex frame was you could bore the 400ex engine out more than a 300. That way you'd have even more power than just the equivilent of a stock 400ex
