GNCC Racing returned to Millfield, OH in July this year to try to avoid the horrible conditions of the past with mud in the May and dust in the September.

In last years mud fest, Joey Kish was able to work himself up to third overall, but was denied the Podium because he wasn't a Pro Racer. His dream of returning this season as a Pro was ended when he was electrocuted on the Job this past November. Joey was only 23 years old and lived for ATV racing. He will be missed, but never forgotten.

Friday Afternoon, the Pros begain claiming their spots on Pro Row as amateurs arrived early to find level parking at the event along the track.

The course also incorporated and extensive motocross track which worked its way up and down between the hillsides with actually only a few difficult jumps.

The water truck was busy all day Friday watering the track because the ground was fairly dry, but in the woods the conditions were perfect with the soil being slightly moist.

By Evening, the majority of the Pros had arrived.

After registering for the race, I quickly noticed that the Tech Inspection line was extremely long and it didn't seem to be moving quickly. After further inspection, I realized the delay was due to sound testing.

This was the first time sound testing was done since Big Buck which was six rounds ago, but this time they were semi enforcing the 104 decibal Limit.

Chris Bithell has his 450R tested

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:03 AM
This testing wasn't just limited to the amateurs because even Pro riders like Chris Borich had to have their machines test.

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:05 AM
Tim explained to Chris that his exhaust system was at 105 decibals, which exceeded the 104 decibale limit, and he will either have to have it repacked by silent sport or replaced with another exhaust inorder to race on Saturday!

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:08 AM
Traci Cecco, the event T-shirt Star, was also told that her exhaust exceeded the limit, so she waited in line with many other racers waiting for her silencer to be repacked, so she could get back in line again to be retested.

I think her smile this time took alot of effort, and I couldn't blame her one bit.

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:12 AM
I was curious to see if any one exhaust proved to be louder or failed more than others, and it didn't seem to matter. All different brand exhaust systems were stacked up on the counter waiting for their repacking. FMF, Yoshimura, GYTR, Big Gun, Duncan Racing, and many more all failed.

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:17 AM
Dennis Robertson was rather busy repacking exhaust systems for the racers for $25.00 each, but once he repacked your exhaust system you were given a receipt which guaranteed you would be able to race on Saturday regardless of your second sound test results.

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:28 AM
Traci's Chief Mechanic and Husband, Rick Cecco, reinstalled her exhaust and sent her back to Tech Inspection. Unfortunately, Traci reading didn't even change after repacking her exhaust, but she was allowed to race anyway because she had a receipt.

Admin
07-13-2004, 06:31 AM
Chris Borich opted not to get his other silencer repacked, but instead he installed another Curtis Sparks exhaust and it passed at 104db

Saturday Morning, Conditions remained dry at the track and boy was it humid. With the Morning racing action about to start, Marty Eckert prepared to go out and capture some of the racing action.

#16 Jeremy Rice took the time to replace his chain and sprockets before the race. Jeremy has had an awesome race year with five Pro Am wins and is currently leading the points.

The morning race conditions were dry and the track was extremely fast with most racers completing an unusual five laps on the 10 mile course, but as the afternoon riders made their way to the starting line, dark clouds started to move in quickly from the west.

Admin

Carrie Joe began informing the racers that heavy rain was moving in quickly and would last about twenty minutes and they will be getting started shortly.

#4 Chad Duvall known as an excellent mud racer grinned ear to ear as I took his photo. Chad made his return to racing two weeks ago at the Wisp after breaking his Collar bone at Rausch Creek. He finished the race in 5th place, but was only ten seconds out of 2nd, which was an awesome way to return.

Last year, I lined up beside Bryan Cook in 4 Stroke A as Bonnie held the Umbrella for both of us, and this year Bryan is on Pro Row and having another incredible year and is currently ranked #6.

#3 William Yokley is currently in 2nd place in points behind Bill Ballance. William lost his spot on the podium at the last race when Chris Borich passed him with only a few turns to go, and I could tell he was hungry for a podium finish.

It was interesting to watch several Japanese gentleman closely inspect and photograph Jeff Stoess’s ATK quad on the starting line.

#22 Kim Kuhnle got off to a good start this season with several top 20 Overall finishes, but has since to break into the top 20. He has been extremely consistent though with only one finish lower than the top 35 Overall.

Admin
07-13-2004, 07:20 AM
#334 Thomas Barrett is the only Pro Rider left that remains on a 400EX. His best finish this year was 10th Overall at Rausch Creek, which surprisingly he finished his best last year with a 4th overall and only a few seconds behind Santo Derisi. I would definitely say that Thomas must not be afraid of the rocks.

Admin
07-13-2004, 07:27 AM
#15 Andy Lagzdins has been extremely consistent since switching to his 450R, except for the Wisp when his aftermarket linkage broke. He is currently 12th in the Pro Class and is only a few points out of the top 10.

Admin

By the time National Anthem was played, the rain began to pour down. Many spectators began running for shelter out of the rain, while Junior Class rider, Gregory Foggin, proudly held his hand to his heart with stars and strips helmet on. It was truly patriotic moment!

Racer Productions wasted no time in starting the race, which caught me totally off quard as I ran through the rows of quads and across the start straight away to grab a shot of the Pros before they headed into the woods.

Bill Ballance and William Yokley were out front!

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:18 PM
William Yokley was the 1st one to emerge from the woods and hit the Motocross track. Even in the sloppy conditions, William Yokley stayed on the gas over some of the double jumps.

Once he hit Pit Row, He quickly stopped to get new goggles before heading out for another lap.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:19 PM
Yokley charged out of the pits to stay in front of Bill Ballance who came into the pits a few seconds behind him.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:20 PM
Bill Ballance also quickly changed his goggles and was off after William before he even got them securely around his helmet.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:22 PM
Chad Duvall was the next one to head into the pits with Matt Smiley and Chris Borich only seconds behind him.

Chad's Team quickly prepared him for his next lap with goggles and gloves.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:23 PM
Chris Borich was able to get the jump on Matt Smiley heading out of the Pits and took over the 4th spot behind Chad Duvall.

Meanwhile, Bonnie Hamrick looks on as Bryan Cook comes flying down pit row!

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:25 PM
Bryan Cook already had his goggles in hand, and was eager to get his face cleaned and a new set of goggles to head back out in 6th Place and try to make up some time of the leaders.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:27 PM
Greg Trew came into the pits in 8th with Jeff Stoess only four seconds ahead of him as Greg stopped for Goggles.

Admin

Brandon Ballance rounded out the top 10 behind Thomas Barrett after the 1st lap.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:37 PM
By the 2nd lap, the heavy rain gave way to on and off showers with the sun poking through the clouds from time to time, but the damage had already been done. The Majority of the original race course was being rerouted out of the woods and into the fields because the off chamber woods trails had riders sliding off the course and through the woods. Also, numerous riders weren't able to climb many of the hills which create huge bottlenecks in several locations with 30+ riders stuck and waiting to get going again.

Bill Ballance managed to pass William Yokley in the 2nd lap and take over the lead by a few seconds as they headed into the pits, but William was able to pass him back by making a short pit stop, which had Bill once again chasing after Yokley as they headed back out onto the MX track.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:38 PM
With William Yokley and Bill Ballance long gone, Chad Duvall came flying in several minutes behind the leaders in third place.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:40 PM
Chris Borich remained in 4th place and was only a few seconds behind Chad Duvall as he pointed at me along the track.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:41 PM
Matt Smiley had lost over a minute on Chris in the 2nd lap, and was on the gas as he headed out for his third lap in 5th place.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:46 PM
Half way through the third lap, Bill Ballance one again had regained the lead!

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:48 PM
William Yokley was only a few seconds behind Bill and was hot of the gas as he roosted across the wide open grass field with Bill in his sights.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:48 PM
Chris Borich battled with lapped traffic as he chased after Chad Duvall in 3rd place.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:52 PM
Meanwhile, Santo Derisi had worked his way up from 14th to 7th place to complete the 2nd lap, and he ran the entire 2nd lap with out goggles. Unfortunately, he claimed by the mud in the third lap which took him almost 1.5 hours to complete which sent back to 18th place to finish the race with only three laps:( .

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:55 PM
Kim Kuhnle worked his way from 17th up to 8th by the end of the second lap and continued to gain ground on the leaders in the third lap.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:57 PM
Jeff Stoess who was one of the favorites to win in such sloppy conditions was running strong in 7th place after the 1st lap, but unfortunately he too got caught up in a bottleneck and track was rerouted around him, which dropped him back to 12th place early in the third lap.

Admin
07-13-2004, 12:59 PM
Greg Trew who also was running well in the 1st lap end up taking over an hour to complete the 2nd lap after his YFZ would restart. He dropped back to 18th place, but didn't give up once it finally refired and quickly began to work his way back through the pack in the third lap.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:03 PM
Brandon Ballance also dropped back to 15th heading into the third lap after finding himself stuck in a ditch after trying to work his way around a bottleneck.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:05 PM
Johnny Gallagher who wanted it to rain was back to 12th after the 1st lap and had dropped all the way back to 16th by the beginning on the 3rd lap, but he never gave up and quickly found himself picking off rider after rider as he charged into the top 10 halfway through the third lap.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:07 PM
By the Beginning of the 4th lap, the on and off rain continued and William Yokley was once again out front, but this time, Bill Ballance was no where to be seen.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:08 PM
The next rider to emerge from the woods to hit the MX track wasn't Bill Ballance at all, but it was Matt Smiley who was over 3.5 minutes behind William Yokley in 2nd Place.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:09 PM
Chad Duvall remained in third place, and was only one minute behind Matt.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:12 PM
Surprisingly, almost three minutes behind Chad Duvall, Bill Ballance came flying around the MX track. In only half lap, Bill Ballance went from being in 1st Overall to 7 minutes out of the lead and back to 4th place.

Admin
07-13-2004, 01:15 PM
Bill Ballance is not one to give up and was pushing his YFZ to its limits trying to gain ground on Chad Duvall as he power slides around the slick track.

Admin

Kim Kuhnle passed Chris Borich as he pitted for gloves and goggles and moved into 5th Place!

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:30 AM
Chris Borich was able to pass Kuhnle back before the end of the lap and finish out the race in 5th place with Kuhnle finishing only 11 seconds back in 6th Place.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:32 AM
Todd Knippenberg dropped back to 14th after the 2nd lap because he lost alot of time caught up in the bottlenecks, but he charged his all the way up to 7th to finish the race.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:35 AM
Johnny Gallagher and Todd Knippenberg swapped positions several times during the race with Johnny finishing the race in 8th only 21 seconds behind Todd.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:39 AM
Andy Lagzdins passed Bryan Cook in pits on the last lap and was able to finish the race in 9th place.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:39 AM
Bryan Cook made it very clear what he thought of the muddy conditions.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:42 AM
shortly afterwards he was forced to stop and find an alternative line to avoid several riders stuck on the side of a slick. The crowd directed him to turn right and try the further down which he ended up doing after waiting several seconds.

Bryan ended up getting stuck on the last lap and dropped back to 10th place to finish the race.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:49 AM
Jeff Stoess wasted no time going up the slick hill on his ATK, and he made it with ease. One thing for sure wass that his quad was extremely loud with the cracked headpipe and easily surpassed any sound guidelines.

The purpose of the sound testing was to keep down the noise level yet Jeff was allowed to continue racing with a quad that was producing sound levels well above the 104db limit. Also, I saw several other quads on the course without silencers at all which were extremely loud.

Frank Grimplin rode his way to a 11th place finish.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:53 AM
With the Checkered flag flying, William Yokley headed across the last portion of the MX track to earn himself the overall win with no other racer in sight.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:55 AM
William Yokley was extremely happy to be back on the Podium again especially with the Overall Win. His last Overall win was at the 1st round of the season.

Admin
07-14-2004, 05:56 AM
Over five minutes later, Matt Smiley made his way to the Podium to claim the 2nd Overall award, which was his 5th this year.

Admin
07-14-2004, 06:03 AM
The mud machine himself, Chad Duvall, once again found himself on the podium after and extremely muddy race. Chad is undoubtly one of the most successful mud racers in the GNCC series. At last years Millfield mud fest, he finished 2nd overall behind Bill Ballance and also finished 3rd overall at the Sparta this year.

Bryan prepares some paper towels for Chad to clean the mud out of his eyes and off his face before accepting his third overall award!

Actually, before he was even 100% cleaned up, he took the time to sign autographs for his fans.

Bill put in the 2nd fastest last lap, but wasn't able to overcome his third lap troubles and finished the race in 4th overall two minutes behind Chad Duvall.

Admin
07-14-2004, 06:12 AM

Pro Am

Raymond Jenks hold the umbrella for his son Chris and his girlfriend before the start.

Chris Jenks is currently in 2nd Place in the Pro Am Class behind Jeremy Rice who has the championship about wrapped up with five wins. Chris's main competition now for the 2nd spot is James Wahl who also has two wins and sits securely in third place, but with a couple of good finishes could allow him to take over the 2nd Spot.

Admin

The start of the Pro Am class was chaos with several riders spinning around backwards heading into the 1st turn.

Jason Lewis and Jason Gudde made it around the first turn smoothly, but Mike Lucas slide sideways in front of Todd Demaree as he rounded the first turn.

Admin
07-15-2004, 06:03 AM
Chris Jenks also got spun around and watched the rest of the class spin around in the 2nd turn of the race as he prepared to join in once again. Todd Demaree was already in hot pursuit in the distance.

Admin
07-15-2004, 06:06 AM
by the end of the 1st lap, James Wahl was in 2nd place behind Brian Brinkley, but James would latter get hung up in a bottle neck and ended up only finishing two laps and finished back in 14th place which was a relief to Chris Jenks.

Admin
07-15-2004, 06:07 AM
Jeremy Rice came through the pits on the 1st lap in 4th place behind Adam McGill who Chad Duvall told us was one to watch after battling with him the previous week at a local event.

4 Stroke A

John Rowling has finally found a machine that can replace his cannondale. John attempted to switch to a 250R last year, but it only lasted for one race and he went back to his Cannondale. This year with the Honda money on the line, he decided to give the 450R a try. It was a bit rocky at first because he quickly found out how easily the tie-rods bend on these machines, but once he got all the bugs worked out, he has been on a "Rowl":D

John has finished the last three races in the top 40 Overall and top 4 in his class, and he has quickly moved up to 5th in the 4stk A Class.

It was great to see Shane Nash back in action after he wrecked at Loretta's on the MX Track, which put a nice slice in his leg. He gave it time to heal and quickly returned to racing, but unfortunately the mud didn't do him well, and he only finished two laps.

Ty Rogers has only been able to attend two GNCC races this year and both of them were the muddiest races ever (Sparta & Penton). Ty would have run in the Morning, but he needed to borrow parts from my Z to race, so he was forced to race in the afternoon.

Hopefully, he won't have to run in the mud at the next race he attends.

I decided that I just needed to put the pedal down to get out and that is exactly what I did, and I quickly realized my trailer was sliding on a flat tire. Luckily I made it to the level road without any major incident.

John Ayers and the GNCC staff quickly came to my aid and helped me change the tire, which I truly appericiated since I forgot my trailer jack.

Thanks Again, John for all your help:)

that boy is a machine, he's a threat now, wait until he does some suspension work! if you could look thru the history of the sport class, i believe that makes joseph the first non honda framed rider to win a sport class race ( a guy did win on a blaster once, but it was in a 250r frame and is now illegal as the class has adaopted the stock fame/engine case rule from the pro class) way to go joseph

You probably would have been set up for dry conditions like most there.

It didn't rain until we all got to the line, in fact it was hot and dry up till then.

It was sloppy.

I think I was in second place until about 10 minutes from the finish.
When most of the guys passed me on a slick hill that I didn't make on my first attempt I figured that I was being lapped but I ended up finishing right behind them all.
