well i went out and got an 03' F-150 with the v6 4.2 in it. and its costing me 60 a week to fill it. thats just to expensive for a 16yr old kid. yeah yeah tell me to go get a job, i got one. 6.75 a week at 25hrs a week only makes me about 120 a week, no way am i blowing half my paychecks everyweek just to get to work! so i absolutley need to down grade. I like the full size truck but want the gas milage of an S10. How do the dakotas do on gas? i dont think they get that much better but what are some figures? i think i get 16city and like 19highway in my truck now. im thinking an S10 would be perfect, im sure if get used to being in a smaller vehicle. but give me some ideas on what should i do.

My experience has been that V6's in full-size trucks just works them too hard and you wind up sacrificing any real MPG savings and you definitely get a dog of a truck for towing anything substantial. I average 16.3mpg in my 5.3 V8 Silverado (ext. cab and 4x4) but the engine doesn't have to work all that hard to move the truck. I accelerate away from stoplights and never get over 2000RPM. You'd definitely save some gas money by switching to an S-10. Gas mileage is not an attribute of any Dakota (or Dodge truck for that matter). My father has a brand new Dakota Quad Cab with the 4.7 and he doesn't get any better mileage than me.

your right. I have a 99 Silverado with the 5.3.... I get around 15-16mpg...on highway ONLY I have managed a solid 17mpg. My new work truck is a V6, the 4.3. The BEST highway mileage I've gotten was 15.8.... combined highway and city, I'm lucky to get 15.

I've never done any stictly highway driving in mine to judge my MPG but I'm probably going to help my brother move to North Carolina next weekend so I'll have to watch on the return trip.

Theres also this thing called a tornado flow (something).... My friend put it in his truck and has been getting a few extra mpg. I can't find the site for it.

They tested this stuff on the news and it's all just a rip-off. With that tornado thing, the car got like .00067 more miles to the gallon...

ya i got the V6 F-150 4x4 8ft bed. i love having the 4x4, and like the 8ft bed for when i go riding. but gas is to damn expesnive. so the S10 is really my ownly solution. if i get one it will be the extreme so there goes 4wheel drive. its something im gunna wish i had later on but its not that valuable to me, especially when filling with gas. and im pretty sure those beds are just big enough for my 400ex, i got the +2s and an LSR axle extended to 3.5, i just have to drive over the wheel wells. and if worse comes to worse i can get a trailer. yeah, thats like 400 there and if it doesnt have a Tow package, another 150 right there, but ill be saving money with in 2 months from gas prices.

how do the S10 extremes with the 4.3 v6 engine do on gas, i know its basicly the same engine size, but the truck is a ton smaller. so thats gotta get it to atleast 20miles to the gallon

Don't drive over the wheel wells. Over time it crushes them. The S-10 is too small for the 400ex. You would need a trailor, but they are not that much $. Look around, I just got a 5x8 for $50!

An s-10 is fine size for your quad...my dad has the 4.3 l v6 and we tow the 450r in the bed, and a trailer we built with the kodiak and either the 250r, mojave, or my friends 400ex on the trailer also...the truck cranks along like that without a hickup!!! it gets about 20-22 mpg (without the quads n shiz)

Toadz400

An automatic 4.3 2WD S-10 gets around 20-22 miles to the gallon, and that was with a lot of climbing hills...so depending on what type of driving you do, you could get better or worse mileage.

The bed on the S-10 will be too small for your extended width 400ex, so just find a little cheap trailer or make your own. It's very simple...if you have the materials and equipment to do so. Or else you could probably, MAYBE fit in the bed by riding over the wheel wells...but like someone else said, it won't be good for them.

A stock width 400ex has to drive over the wheel wells to get into the bed, so I don't think a +2/+3.5 would fit too well in the bed...it might fit but it'd be a tight squeeze, just go with a cheap little fix-er-upper trailer.

im just a dailey driver. mostly town driving. if i get the s10 ill be looking more for a manual but ill settle for the auto if its available. 20-22mpg is more tords what i want. id kill for the 3000GT with the twin turbos but riding has put a damper on that

Oakdale usually has the best prices, and my dad gets 3 cents off per gallon because he works with MNDOT. When we were in Florida, he refused to pay over 2 dollars for gas...I thought we were going to be stranded somewhere because of his stubborn ***.

I don't drive my 5.0l v8 daily but I'm kinda scared of what I gonna get! my dads f250 with the 6.0l powerstroke diesel has been gettin around 15 in the city, and 18 on the highway, I think it stayed around 16 with about 5000lbs of trailer goin down the highway yesterday! right now, diesel is $1.65-ish, and gas is like $1.81. if gas gets over $1.90 when I start drivin my truck daily, I gonna buy an old beater car for like 200 bucks, and just drive that to school and such!

i prolly rev the motor a lot like tommy said he does, and ive notice if i back off revving so high the gas last a little longer, i filled up sunday night and ive put maybe 150 miles on the truck so far and im at half a tank exact. gas is like a 1.95 average up here. and i dont fill til i need too, sunday night it was 54 dollars i think total. So my next step is finding a Chevy Extreme. black, extended cab, 5spd and a 4.3 engine in it

Chanman..... I drive 60 miles each day to go to work....and the gas prices were costing me about $450 month to fill my truck up ('94 Chevy Stepside) - I finally just sucked it up, bought a stupid little Geo Metro, and now my boyfriend drives my Chevy to work every day (he only has to go 5 miles!). Now I pay about $12 to fill up, and can go over 300 miles on a tank of gas.....however, my ego is totally deflated and I feel like a teeny-bopper driving that thing around!!! LOL!!!! But.....you gotta do what you gotta do.......when gas prices get manageable or I get a raise...I can drive my truck every day again - until then, we all have to make sacrifices sometimes!!! ;)

I had a 97 Z-71 and it got abot 16 mpg with city and hwy driving.

I though I was doing the right thing and traded down to a nissan frontier v6 auto. Doh...It might have got 17mpg at best. Boy was that a mistake. I gave up alot of truck for a mesely 1 mpg,lol

Now I have a new dodge ram with the hemi now. I average about 15mpg with a mix of city and hwy driving.

I have heard the new f250's are getting 18 to 20 mpg. I think that will be my next one.

i havent figured out what my fullsize gets, im too scared to know, but i only drive it to the track, or when my car is down: like right now when i hit a dog, :grr: . you could prob save up, buy a cheap little car and keep your big truck, plus your ins might drop since you will be driving the little car more. i know my motor swapped crx gets 35+ mpg and i drive about 80 miles a day.

400grl
07-13-2004, 03:27 PM
Yep - that's what I did - I got my Metro for $1500 - I figured I'd save that much in gas in 3 months anyway!! It's definately helping my budget - that's for sure!

i had a friend that picked up a 4 door purple metro. and drove it for years. that thing could not get out of its own way but it got great milage. we drove the crap out of that car he even took it to an autocross race once and it made a pass or two down the drag strip. :D

Yeah - I have the 4-door 4-banger - it's a slow POS...but it's in good shape and it's been great so far!! :) As long as I have a long on-ramp to the freeway, I'm good to go!! LOL!!
