For 2005 the 400ex is supposed to be getting reverse and restyled plastic. From what I hear the headlight will be similar to the 450R, but integrated more naturally.

Unsure if there are any other changes.

That's all I know - came from a trustworthy source who actually saw it in person.

There better be mods to the engine....Just changing plastics and adding reverse with a different light isn't really going to cut it.

Liquid cooling and bumped-up compression would be nice too...ah why not add some NAWZ too man?!

I was thinking liquid cooled would be what they're going to do since z400 has it, and that is where the compition is.

Haven't heard - guy that saw it didn't get to look at it long enough to tell if there were any small chassis changes (didn't see any big ones) - more than likely I bet the new plastics will work, but we won't know until it's out...

Reverse selector was on the right front fender & color options are the same.

i herd that it will come with NOS and 20s with low profiles from the factory!

rofl...i'm glad they are updating the 400...very much needed. i hope they add more then just plastic and reverse. :)

i think they should build either a 300ex framed or 400ex framed racer with a crf250r motor...def would be sweet...if i could get my hands on one of those motors i'd show ya lol...

Yea...I tried reading his sentence a few times and still couldn't get it...something about guessing??

For the '05 EX, I at least expect liquid cooling...that would be great.

Rip_Tear
07-09-2004, 07:29 PM
Liquid cooling would be nice, but that would probaly effect the frame... I doubt they would change the mounting of the plastic (unless it was just the little black peices of hardware being adjusted). Liquid cooling won't help us who already have a 400ex though...

Out_Sider
07-09-2004, 07:39 PM
its not going to have liquid cooling.. its a xr400 motor people!!!, they would have put liquid cooling on the xr before the ex. reverse will probably be on it, plastic would be a good idea, i'd like to see some more things though like shocks with rezzys, and some 450r footpegs just to make it a lil more stable

Outsider is right - if you're expecting liquid cooling expect to be disappointed.

What do you guys expect liquid cooling will get you? Tons of HP? More reliability? It won't.

One of the nice things about the 400EX is it's simplicity. The air cooling works great and is only a small limiting factor in developing power.

Yea I know it wouldn't have liquid cooling, they would have to design a whole new engine for that. I would like the liquid cooling because of the ease of knowing that I could bore it out and not have to deal with overheating, and of course I could buy a bigger radiator to help cool it down. With the air cooled engine, you can't do much for cooling besides adding another oil cooler and a bigger oil tank?

86atc250r
07-09-2004, 08:47 PM
The 400EX has shown over the years that it does fine with several overbore sizes without worry about overheating.

Numerous people are running well over 460cc's without trouble.

If you're wanting more HP you should really consider stepping up to one of the more modern engine and chassis setups and not wasting more money on a quad that will end up costing more and going slower in the long run.

Why would Honda upgrade the motor or suspension? They are making it a trail Quad.

hahaha...you still spelled some stuff wrong;) .

86atc- I would upgrade to a new machine, it's just way too much money for me right now...I'm looking to sell both my machines by the end of the summer and save up for a new truck, then maybe next winter buy one of the '05's 450Rs, or maybe even an '04 if there are any left over.

i love the 400ex plastics. they shouldnt change that.

i don't think they should do anything to them at all.a reverse will be ok but if u just keep moddin it out it will end up like the 450r so y mess up whats good when u get what they already got, thats what i don't understand.the 400ex is a 1 of a kind if u wont something that already has that stuff and upgraded and faster then u get the 450.i think all they should do is put a reverse in and let it be, just my 2 cents

Another strong rumor is that Honda is working on a new quad with the XR 650 (liquid cooled) motor in it. If that quad comes to be and has reverse and elec start, it would be the quad for me!

I've read this "rumor" on more than one occasion, on more than one forum. We'd all like to talk to the guy that saw the new EX in person (I'm sure we all have about a 100 questions he could answer 2 of). '86ATC250R has always been one to shoot strait in the past, and I can't thank him enough for resisting the urge to keep it to himself.
Much gratitude!

Are we still grading for spelling? How'd I do?

well hopefully they will make it lighter, the suspension is already ok mabe a set of rezzies, and make only the seat come off not plastic too., put the battery in the air box not on the side, make a better and bigger storage, and make the seat like the 450r :blah:

Why don't you like the whole rear plastic coming off?? Every race when I take mine off to clean my filter, people are always saying how nice it must be to have all of that come off, and it be so open. I like it, and hope it stays like that. But the battery in the air-box would be nice:)

I hate my EX especially because of that, even after "mastering the art of putting the seat/plastics back on" it still takes way too long. If the battery wasn't in the way it'd be a lot easier to put those freakin' plastics back on, I like on my Banshee how just the seat comes off...easy access to the airbox and it takes a split second to put the seat back on.

but then think when you are workin on the axle...or somthing in that area, its so nice to have the fenders out of the way in a simple snap, not 20 bolts and such;)

Yea I agree with you on that one, I just wish it was a lot easier to put back on...thus why I think they should move the battery, that makes it A LOT easier.

I think they should move the battery also. Help keep the sub-frames straight as well as making the seat easier to put on:cool:

I you're having trouble getting the seat/fenders back on you haven't "Mastered the art of putting the fenders on".

There is a little trick to getting them on quickly and easily - once you figure it out, it's excessively simple.

I personally really dislike the fact that my 450R fenders do not come off with the seat for two reasons ---

One --- because they're in the way when I'm working on stuff & take much longer to remove and install than my 400EX fenders

Two --- because they are rigidly mounted, the rear fenders are *MUCH* more likely to crack in the event you overturn the quad.

On another note---- Tomorrow's the day we get to see the new EX. Although I'm not intrested in buying another 400ex I am very interested in seeing the styling and other changes.

well i liked them to but when i am in a race and the hole seat and plastic comes off i cant race like that, if just the seat came off i would keep on trucken

and ya i like the part when you are working on it you just pop the hole thing off

86atc250r
09-08-2004, 03:12 PM
If you are racing and the whole assembly comes loose, there is a serious maintenance issue that needs to be addressed anyway.

In 5 years of racing my EX heavily and almost 20 years of playriding on various Honda's with removable rear plastic, I can't ever say that I ever had plastic come off unexpectedly on any of my ATVs....

I've seen it happen, but there's always an explanation & a resolution....

Simple solution, a zip tie. I doubt the seat is going anywhere when its zip tied to closed. Same idea as the locking seat latches which "prevent" it from coming off.
