I'm thinking about installing an 11:1 piston and stage-2 Hot Cam in my 400EX and I have a couple of questions.

Will I have to have the cylinder honed for the new rings to seat correctly and will the engine have to be broke in like it was rebuilt. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes & Yes..... I would deff get the rings matched to the cylinder.... if you are doing all that, might as well go .080 over & maker a 416.

Yes it will need to be rehoned. You can do it yourself with a ballhone from an auto parts store or pay like 15 bucks for a dealership to do it. It will then need to be broken in again...

How much do you think a dealer would charge to bore it, to a 416? Because I want mine bored but I don't have the tools, like a torque wrench, to do it. So I couldn't even have machine shop do it. I do have a manual though.

Most places charge 30-50 to bore. You wont have to have the cylinder re-sleeved for that bore so that should be the only charge. You will just have to get it bored and honed....

you WILL need a torque wrench for installing the parts.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking I should just go with a 440 kit that comes with a new sleeve. Am I correct in assuming that the new sleeve will be honed and ready for the new rings? Will I have to do anything to me valves and valve springs if I go with a 440 kit. My engine does not have many hours on it so I don't think the valve train needs any work. Are there any drawbacks to going to a 440? I have heard that the 440 doesn't rev as high as a 416. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Stupid question.. whats the `honed` and `break` terms means ?

honed means "percé le cylindre" and break in means "rodage";)

what kind of jibberish is that :huh :D

you will need to get your cylinder bored out to accept the larger sleeve for a 440. also, there is a good chance the cylinder will need to get honed or at least the rings will need gapped on the piston so it matches the sleeve.

If I understand this right, if I want to put in a stock bore 11:1 piston I will have to have the sleeve honed in order to get the new rings to seat correctly. I would think that I should also check the ring gap to make sure it is within tolerance. If its not I would have to either have the sleeve bored out and go with oversized rings with a stock bore 11:1 piston or have it bored out to 416 and go with a oversized 11:1 piston or get a new 440 sleeve with 11:1 piston.

Having the head honed will not yeal larger rings. Stock size will be fine. You can bore the stock sleeve out to a 426 but no farther. I would not re-sleeve just for a 440. And yes, a 416 and 426 would rev alot faster and higher than the 440.

that sounds good. if you need to do more than a simple hone, i would just bore it .040 over to clean the sleeve up nicely. don't mess with oversized rings. i would just go with .040 over (406) or .080 over (416). a new sleeve is a MUST when going with a 440. the stock one isn't big enough.

Another thought on the 440. You'll have to have the old sleeve pressed out and a new one pressed in. This is alot more expensive than just having it bored and honed. If I was you I'd go with the 416.
