I need help deciding between dropping a crf motor in my ex (seen below). Or start over fresh with a brand spankin new yfz.

I've started to lean more towards the crf mainly because I already have so much on my ex and i think it'd be a big loss to start over, but let me know what you think

prolly be easier to buy a yfz . and sell the ex but that thing is nice. prolyy take more time to do the conversion and im not sur u might prolly have more probs wit da conversion.

Deffinatly do a CRF conversion! You already got a sweet quad and probley have it dialed in good, so why start over?

CRF. In a way I wish I would have just modified my EX more and dropped a CRF, but I don't have any complaints getting the YFZ and starting over.

Id do the CRF man, if you go with a LSR or Arens frame it will be fairly easy to do. Im pretty sure your swingarm will stil work, but you might want to look into that. Only thing that might hold you back is finding a CRF motor.

If you do a YFZ you would end up putting another $9,000 into it...

crf conversion all the way. If you bought a yfz you would just be "another yfz owner"

that quad you have is origional and would turn more heads than a yfz any day

Ahhh, muff just wanted another reason to post his badazz quad so all can drool over it!:blah:

I'm saying go crf bud. Too much time and money would be spent building up the yfz.....stick with the Hunny!

lol your onto my plan :p

that is definetly why I want to go for a crf instead. Having to start over from scratch would suck. One of my close friends went with the yfz this year, he's spend almost 18000 in it so far :eek2:

the reason why I'd consider giving it up is because I've gotten quite frustrated with this quad at times, 9 outta 10 were due to motor problems :o I havent even gotten to really ride the thing a dozen times this year :grr:

diffintly get the crf. it will be a way better quad than the yfz

muff i know u maintain ur quads alot so this probably own't bother u....

but just remember u don't get on a CRF and ride it... u gotta do a chit load of maintence... yfz u won't have 2...

i say go with the crf in a arens or lsr frame:macho

i would deff. go with the crf. there are too many yfz's out there you would be different AND faster for like 4 grand instead of lie12000 in a yfz. BTW bad a$# quad man

There is alot of maintenence on a crf quad but any quad you race needs alot of maintenence. I wouldnt worry about that part. If i were u i would probly just throw a crf motor in there. You already have lt suspension, and u can find already converted frames or convert your own for cheap, and crf motors are going alot cheaper these days. i figure you could build a conversion for 4000 with what you already have. If you try to sell your 400 you would be lucky to get 5000 out of it plus then buy a yfz for 7000 so your already 2000 in the hole and have a stock quad that your 400 could have hung with. If you were starting with scratch i would say yfz but do the conversion.

I think your EX is too nice to sell and start over. I'd just drop a CRF in it...you'll probably be happier.

alright muff the votes are saying crf !! so when is this going down? :D

muff

alright alright. My current plans are for the crf. Sometime this week I'll be stopping by walshs to see what he could do for me, hopefully wont be to expensive, if so I'll just go with the Arens frame or something.

If anyone spots a used setup out there, let me know about it! I wouldnt mind buying an entire crf quad and partin out the suspension and whatnot. In like a month or so I should have plenty of money to pick one up

oh and I dont mind having to wrench on the quads all of the time...cause I already do. Plus its nice getting to know how/why everything works :macho

crf would be sick or a ktm motor would be sweet. i understand why you dont wanna get rid of the ex. so much mony in it. same with me; so much money in my z. its nice to be different and not have the same bike as your buddy or what not:cool:

Im almost done with my YZ conversion, I couldnt be happier with the LSR frame, everything has bolted up great. The YZ sounds real fast when I can get it started. Im hoping to get it jetted soon, and ride it for awhile, then in winter put a YZ450 cam in and bore it to a 440.

Muff the conversion will be sweet, remember you can always get some money out of your frame and motor, electronics, etc... As far as mantainance, whether its a YFZ, YZ, or 450r, etc... It is a expensive motor and alot of maintance doesnt hurt.

well from the looks of things I'm gonna finish racing the year out on my ex, these last 6 races, and probably try to either sell it or part it out. I'm thinkin more towards parting it unless someone will offer $7000 for it  cause I can get that from all of the parts.

sorry guys, but after talking with some pros and friends I will be hopping on a yfz for next year :o

lol

goin wit the yfz makes sense, less maitenance(sp), enjoy it!

lol yea I cant believe no ones said that yet either. I will have have plenty of time to make the decision between the two, but so far it looks like a lot of yfzs out on the track :eek2:

personally id do a WR450 engine converson, u get E start, a 5spd trans and more power out the box than a yfz, and u already have a pep/roll front end, dont get any better than that. NOTHING on that honda is compatable with the yfz, unless u buy a special swing arm. id say get the WR, very unique, plus ur used to riding 400ex's, why change?

SRH
07-12-2004, 08:37 PM
if your very serious about racing id get the yfz for sure because alot of the classes would limit you if you had a crf, on the other hand you have alot of money in your 400ex and could build a very nice crf, i was in the same position as you and i built a yfz, im glad i did, its so much better than 400ex, the brakes, the geometry , everything

i wouldnt look at it as a cost or money issue but as how far youd like to go with racing if you just plan on racing locally and 1 or 2 nationals a year why not just go crf and not lose all the money you have into your 400ex but if one day you think you might wanan start hitting all the nationals and seeing where you can go you gotta start riding production equipment, either way youll love it

oh yeah, and dont go with the unique machine because theres a reason its unique, a crf hybrid or a yfz are probaly the best machines out there right now, you wanna be unique build a show bike you wanna be fast your gonan build a race bike, i mean you dont see ricky carmicheal showing up at a national on a tm just to be cool....

I didn't read every post, but dropping a crf motor would be "kinda" like your own quad. No one has one just like it, ya know? That's what what I wanna do, soon as I get some more money.....................
