I read in a magazine that honda has a surplus of cr 250 engines and they are going to put them in 400ex frames and will cost around $6000.

well i doubt you will see honda releasing a new 250r quad in the future. service honda started this small venture about a year ago. a member of this site owns one and he seems to like it.

i dont read the magazines much, i get all my info from this site or first hand from being friends with damn near everyone who is" in the know":p

here is a picture of the before mentioned "R" taken by me at the Steel Creek GNCC Race.

as far as the 400ex? i havent heard any info one way or another. id actually think they may stop producing the 300ex before the 400ex gets the boot but its hard to say. Honda bean counters will do the math and im sure the model with the highest decreasing sales figures will be scraped

Yeah... your answer is they SUCK. For 8k you could just build a sweet R with almost all aftermarket parts.

I agree, stick a CR250 engine in a 400EX frame and charge 8 grand? Just build yourself a REAL R for that much money.

I rode a service honda R at the last casey xc race. I thought it ran like a champ, it pulled hard and had great power all the way to top. But 310Rduner and Roostin250R are right, with the price of R's down now you would be much better off buying an all aftermarket 250r.
The owner did tell me if you have an old ragged out 400ex you can send service honda your frame. They will use the VIN #'s off that frame and put them on a brand new 400ex frame, they will then customize your 400ex swingarm and send you a cr250 motor complete with carb, pipe, electrical, radiator, ect.. Then you put your stock plastic, a-arms, suspension back on and you have a service R for $4,500.
Either way in my opinion the only way to go would be buy a fully built aftermarket R for your style of riding.
I'm glad to see somebody is still trying to keep the R dream alive, because I still think it is the best quad ever. But the price is too high, for a stock framed, stock bike motor, with stock 400ex parts quad.

the cr250 motor over time will shake the living piss out of you. it has no counterbalancer. some of you may or may not know when there were a couple of companies trying to get barry hawk to run the kx250 motor in a r frame. they tested them out and their comments on the matter were....we want all of out teeth to be in tact by the end of the year....anyway, if you want a r get a real r and not a cr motor in a quad.

If my memory serves me correct, our current 5 time GNCC Champ Bill Ballance was a part of that short-lived Kawasaki Cross Country team.....that bike had the KX250 2stroke motor.

After 3 rounds of gncc racing I am currently in 2nd place of the vet class and still have all my teeth. Holdin my own in a class packed with 450's. On the last lap at Florida my Service Honda pulled the fastest lap in the class by more than 40 seconds. Iwas able to continue to double and triple in the sand whoops even late in the race. Don't knock what you don't have till ya tried one.:blah: :blah: :blah:

The proposed TRX650R will be based off of the XR650R motor and will be built to contend with the Raptor, DS650 and other heavyweights.

If the powers even 80% of what it feels like in the bike....its gotta be wicked:devil: :D especially an 02-05 CR250:macho

I hope I can find another LT250R chasis here in Japan because we have (2) extra RMX250 motors collecting dust in our shop. Nothing like a 50hp powervalved Quad:D

i am just going by what barry hawks mechanic told me (tony kellner) and thats great that you like it. but i would never buy that setup for me... and btw, let me know how the bike holds up (plus your teeth ;)) after the season is over

This is my third season on one. I also did all of the preliminary riding on the first prototype. Thats where the name came from. 2 years of riding and district racing had no problems but nationals put the machine to severe tests last year. I raced a lonestar chasis and felt it was to ridgid. Couple broken motor mounts and cracked the frame in front of the footpegs same place I always cracked my 400ex's and 250r's. With more gussets it started to break the seal of the head gasket so I started drilling the head stay so the bolt was not tight and the engine didn't hang from the stay and this corrected any problems of the such. I just got back from back to back running Florida and Georgia GNCC's with 3 hours riding between at Florida's Hardrock motorcross park and the only maintanance I did was change the air filter and tighten and lube the chain. Got it all cleaned up and ready to run on Sunday at a district race with zero problems. This machine doesn't vibrate anymore than my Duncan 440 national motor did and its 75 lbs lighter and hits a hell of a lot harder. The best advantage this machine has is how hard I can charge into a corner before havin to brake. I have been rearended from guys judging me as to where to slow going into a corner. Last year at the Wisp race the first lap people started jumping out of the way in the corners on the pavement section cause I was charging so hard into the corners before pitching it sideways.
