loosen those 4 bolts, on the left side of the carrier, you'll see holes to put the chain adjustment tool in. It's a short rod, I assume one came with the quad? Anywho... using that tool to rotate the carrier to tighten the chain. You should have about 1.5-2 inches of chain deflection. Then tighten those 4 bolts up.

If he just got the quad and it has the stock carrier, then he will need a big flathead screwdriver and not the little adjustment rod like you need with the Lone Star's and aftermarket carriers. Make sure you leave some sag/slack in there because if you dont youll roast the chain and sprocket 3 times as fast... Make sure you keep some slack in there ESPECIALLY if you are jumping. Youll want to set the sag with you sitting on the bike...

A rule for chain adjustment on dirtbikes is a '3 finger rule'. that would end up being 11/2"-2" like LTandRaptorrider said. Keep an eye on that. It is a VERY important component. To tight and ya can bust ur chain when ya bottom out. To loose and ya will wear out ur chain/sprockets from the chain snappin really fast from alot of slack to being in motion.
