Try softening your suspension- it stays on the ground better when the back squats and the front extends. A link like GT Thunder's really lets it squat better on the 400!

Get an easy pull clutch lever. They change the leverage to where the clutch doesn't engage as suddenly.

 :o it's boggin in 2nd?? I'm w/ Lil on this one, you need to give it some more throttle, I do 2nd gear starts all the time on our 400 w/ NO problem  I'm still saying though that it's LOTS of practice, just go our in a field or whereever & keep doing them!!

1st gear and you have got to use the clutch alot!

On a dead engin start it takes one heck of a built 400ex motor for it to be faster starting in 2nd gear than in 1st gear.

That's what I ended up doing too. I practiced in a field and never could keep the front end down in 2nd.

I also have to start with my foot on top of the shifter (sounds weird, but it works). I was getting to anxious and shifting too soon at the start (no, I'm not blonde, just a beginner).
As soon as I push the start, my foot just starts shifting away, maybe it's a lefty thing ;)

I start in 1st and slip the clutch all the way through the first turn even while shifting.

I'm with Mister pro racer dude:blah: I always start in 1st gear,I'm to worried about dumping the clutch off the start and stalling in 2nd gear.Like stated before practice, practice, practice. An extended swing arm (1 1/4 in)helps alot also but expensive.
