Has anyone tried a color change by painting the plastics instead of buying all new? If so... how'd it turn out and what should I apply before the paint to keep from fading/chipping/wearing?

It really isn't recommended. Rubbermaid has even done tests and nothing works very well. A good automotive paint will do better than anything with proper prep but it still doesn't hold up on the trails/track. Maybe in the dunes or for a drag quad. Auto paint is expensive and spray paint like the Krylon plastic paint will peel in big pieces the first wash. Your better off with new plastic or to stick with the original.

Painting plastics is a bad idea, once your plastic hits the sun, or any heat it will expand and contract, forcing the paint to bubble and come off.

not worth the time / hassle.

my friend works at a shop and he said you can add a flex to the auto paint so it wont crack but its expensive. i would go with new plastic that way it wont scratch as easy

I saw a commercial the other night for this new paint Krylon has out for plastics. Here is a link (http://www.krylon.com/main/product_template.cfm?levelid=5&sub_levelid=10&productid=1751&content=product_details)

Not sure if it works or not though.

Well I used the Krylon Fusion paint yesterday on my rear plastics & it looks 100% better!! It went on real nice, I did use red over red, don't know how good it would cover a different color but it worked great. Here's a couple pics this is for those of us on a tight BUDGET & can't afford new plastics, I'll just keep painting mine till I CAN afford them :):) I'm dong the front today!!

I painted mine with PPG with the flex additive. Make sure you do all your prep work or it won't look good. Mine lasted a really long time but I mostly ride in the sand. http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58345&highlight=I+painted+my+plastic

Laker custom has clear plastics that you can paint the underside of them. That way it doesnt scratch the paint

WEll I'm gonna give a quick update on my painted plastics!! I used the Krylon Fusion about a month ago, I've washed it a few times since, & rode it, all I can say is that it is holding up GREAT & washes up great too!! Hasn't chipped a once :)
