I don't think age should be a factor.

Well unfortunately there has to be a starting point and age is the easiest way to do it. Mental capabilities as well as physical abilities are what I look for. My son has the physical strength @ 6 yrs old to flip his scrambler 50 completely over. He got himself stuck the other day and jumped off to get it unstuck, well his idea of unstuck was upside down on the other side of the stump he was hung up on. He can throw that thiong around like it's nothing. However his mental capacity is such that i qwould be a bit nervouse to let him on a 125cc... I know that physically he can handle it, just not mentally.

16 is a good "starting" age for a quad of this nature. Not saying it's 100 % correct ... but a good start.

Age doesnt really matter as long as they are 12 or somthin. As long as they have experince and are big enought for one. I mean lets say theres a guy thats 30 but hes a midget so do u think he can handle a 400ex? i doubt it.

I started on a 300 and could handle that. Just got a built 400 and it's a handful. I'm 19, 160# and 6' tall. It really depends on what you start on, I know a 10 year old who rides a 400 stroked warrior, and has no problems.

I started riding when i was 6 i think...maybe 7? I had a 400ex when I was 13...it was just fine for me.

yeah 400ex's are pretty easy to handle, but what about the kfx 400 and the z400?

The 400ex is not much different than a z/kfx. I started on a trailblazer when I was 12. Then, went to a warrior (age 14), POS banshee (15), then got my 400ex when I was around 16. Still don't think it's fast enough.

i was in 8th grade when i bought my 400... i was 12 i think... has no problems riding it but i was also mature enouf to know if i screw around i'm goin down... i knew not to ride over my head...

age really has nothing to do with it... its all on ur size, weight, riding abilities...

i know a kid in my class in 7th grade who was 6'1 180lbs... now hes 6'7 300lbs or so... if u woulda put him on a trx90 he would had to ride with his legs over the bars...

personally i think a 400 can get a teen in more trouble then a kfx or z400 could for one reason... the 400ex doesn't have reverse and the other 2 do... on a z400 u can pop it into reverse and back down out of a situation... i know me as a 12 year old coudln't pick my quad up... usually it took 2 of us to move it if we got suck or in a jam... so personally i thik the z400 is a better machine for a younger kid...

also the speed, handling, etc of the 2 are so close to being the same that if u can't handle one u can't handle the other one...

well my 400 was my first quad but ide ride with my brother, watch him ride and he thought i was fine for it and i got it wen i was 14 and it took a lil gettin use to but i did fine on it, but yeah age really dosent matter, its skill and all that other stuff you add in along the line

Here's my age range thoughts based on certain theories:

Honda's only
9-10: TRX90
11-12: TRX250EX
13-14: TRX300EX
15-16: TRX400EX
17-???: TRX450R

I'm 15 that's why I got my 400ex 2 monthes after my birthday! I thought I was big/old/experianced enough for one now. I'm pretty darn sure that I was right.:D

To tell you the truth it really doesn't matter. I've drove Rapters, 450s, 350s, 400s, just about everything and I think I can handle them just fine. It really has to do with skill and experience. I've been driving atvs since I was 7 so that's like 8 years of experience.

i think that the 400ex should be more like 13-14 but with experience

Im 13 and ride my buddies YFZ all the time! It's got a HMF full system, cam mod, filtered, burgard +1's, and thats about it for performance. I can handle it just fine! I've rode a 450r 416ex, 426ex, 250r, 265r, 330ex, 250ex, mojave, warrior's, blaster, and thats about it. I've been riding for about 2 1/2 years now. So i would think he'd be fine.

if theyve got the maturity and respect for the machine, and is physically big enough to get it unstuck out of most cases on his own, then he can "handle" it.;)
