Jim Pinkston, ITP Tires, decided it was easier to bicycle the course. The only way to check out the GNCC course before an event is either on foot or bicycle, and the course is normally almost 10 miles which makes the bicycle a very attractive alternative to walking.

You didn't have to walk far to see this huge stair step jump on the MX track. The XC course utilitized almost the entire MX track, and it contained a mix of doubles, step ups, and tabletops.

The track was extremely dry Friday Afternoon, and the water truck was out watering the entry road and sections of the track along the pit areas, but as evening approached the skies darkened and the rain came in with vengeance. In only a few hours, over an inch of rain was dumped on the track which turned the MX track into a mud bog.

Saturday the rain clouds gave way to sunny skies and temps in the low 80's, which made for a perfect day for racing.

Greg Trew got geared up in the pits before heading to the starting line.

Bryan wasted no time getting spun around and lead Chris and Santo into the woods chasing down the rest of the pack. The first 4 miles of the course was extremely tight and single lined. The thick Virginia underbrush made it extremely difficult to find alternative lines around riders without getting stuck.

After a time correction, Jeremy Rice was awarded the third Overall spot on the Podium. Jeremy manged to finish the race 10 seconds faster than Chris Borich, which dropped Chris back to 4th Overall.

You could tell that Chris wish he would have charged harder at the end of the race when the news was announced.

Admin
06-17-2004, 12:05 PM
With Jeremy Rice taking over Chris Borich's spot on the Podium, two new comers were on the Podium(Bryan Cook and Jeremy Rice). Bill Ballance showered the crowd after his overall victory, while Bryan and Jeremy put the champagne down the hatch. You could feel the excitement in the air for the them both, but the drama was far from over!!!!

Admin
06-17-2004, 12:21 PM
After a few riders protested, Bill Ballance, Chris Borich, and Matt Smiley for supposedly not re-entering the track asap after a section of the track became blocked. The three rode along the outside of the woods and reentered once it exited the woods.

The dispute became heated and the three riders involved tried to prove their case to Racer Productions, and it was originally decided to doc them one minute off of their time, but this would have still left Bill Ballance as the Overal Winner, so the ruling was changed to doc them all two positions.

The decision surely didn't set well with Bill because he felt 100% that he didn't do anything wrong faced with the situation. It was a very difficult decision for Racer Productions as well, and they made what they felt was the right ruling.

The result of the ruling gave Bryan Cook the Overall Win! He accepted the award, but it definitely wasn't the way he wanted to win his 1st overall. Either way you look at it, Both Bill and Bryan had great rides, and it is a shame to see the ending go down in history with controversy surrounding it.

Admin
06-17-2004, 12:24 PM
Jeremy Rice found himself also moving up from Third to second overall after the ruling. Bill Ballance was dropped back to third overall, and I am not sure if he is going to appeal his case to the AMA/ATVA. He was wearing a helmet cam during the race, which would show exactly what happened when him and the others approached the section track.

Either way, I congratulate Jeremy Rice on another Great Race and many more to come!!!

Open A

Michael Johnston rides for ATV Addiction and has been involved in XC racing for a few years. He has attended a few races this year, but he hasn't had the best of luck with finishing until the last race at Rausch Creek where he finished 6th in the class and 44th overall. Hopefully, this was a turning point for Mike for the remainder of the year.

Admin
06-18-2004, 12:15 PM
Tom Hertz has been pretty consistant this year finishing in the top 10 for most of the races except for the last race at Rausch Creek. Tom continues to stick with his 250R while his brother Rob has opted to move onto the 450R with great success. These two brothers are great competitors and it is great to have them involved with the sport.

Tom is currently ranked 8th in this highly competitive class.

Mike Benson finally threw in the hat on the Yamaha and switched to the 450R after only finishing 2 out of the last 6 races without problems. They weren't all directly related to Yamaha either because he snapped an axle off at Georgia which brought his day to an early end.

If Mike can finish a race, he is usually running in the top 40 overall which is pretty impressive for a guy that has been racing as long as him with competitors half his age.

Also when Mike goes out to race, he is usually on a machine that is far from stock. One of the neatest accessories he added to his 450R is the Rekluse Automatic Clutch, which he has had nothing but good things to say about it. I guess we will find out how good it works at the track.

That is one nice looking 450R!

In the End, Josh Whitehead put in the ride of his life. He finished a career best 13th Overall and Won the Open A Class on one of Chris Borich's old 250R's. I think Josh must have got some of Chris's Spirit with that quad.

Congratulations Josh on your awesome finish!

Admin
06-18-2004, 12:32 PM
Scott Fleischhauer rode his way to 17th Overall finish and Eric Davis was thirty seconds behind him with his 19th Overall finish. Three of the Open A riders finished in the top 20 overall which is really impressive and shows the amount on talent in that class!

Congratulations Eric Davis!

Mike Benson lost lead as the race went on and finished 5th and 26th overall behind Jeffrey Pickens, which wasn't bad at all for someone who hasn't raced since Lorretta Lynn's.

Mike was extremely impressed with his new race machine and told me over and over how well the Rekluse automatic clutch worked for him. He never had to worry about stalling it, which was a big plus without an electric start.

I think I will be checking into one of those clutches for my 450R
:D

Bryan Baker is a machine!!!

He is an outstanding racer, and it show in the way he consistently puts his 500+ lb Vforce near the front of the pack. Bryan finished the last two races in the top 20 overall and finished this weekend an impressive 27th overall and 6th in the Open A Class.

It was incredible to watch him launch the Vforce over the jumps:eek:

Wes Stone returned to racing after missing the last two rounds due to crashing hard while practicing at home on his 250R. He was extremely luckily not to be severely injuried, but he still was hurt enough to be sidelined for over a month healing up, and he made his return this weekend. Ironically, the time off didn't slow him down any, but instead he had his best race of the year with a 32nd overall and 8th place finish.

It is great to have you back so soon Wes, and I wish you continued luck for the rest of the season.

If it weren't for Wes's support, I wouldn't have been able to race in Florida, so Thanks Again Wes for making it possible.

265A Class

A Class which use to be the Premiere ATV Amateur is starting to dewindle away to nothing. This round only had 6 entries and it continues to shrink.

The talent still exist in the class with Sean Neidlinger who is having an incredible year! He won his third race of the year and did it finishing 15th Overall which was a career best!

Sean is a great guy and has awesome family support. I think if he stick with it we will be hearing his name more and more.

Congraluations on the finish Sean!!!

Check out the rut he pounded through

Lee Green made his GNCC debut this year at the Patriot, and he quickly found out that existence maintenance is required before the race in order to finish the two hours without incident. He derailed his chain in the first lap, which took him sometime to get back on before he took off again.

He managed to finish three laps and finished 5th in the class, and I am sure he had a great experience.

4 Stroke A

Another very competitive class which outputs a couple pros each year. Both Jeff Stoess and Bryan Cook jumped from the 4 stroke A Class to Pro and they both have won overalls this year which is very impressive in a Rookie Year. Rick Cecco and other jumped up to the Pro AM class and also have had a great year.

Ben Wrightsman and Jason Meek must be looking to catch some of the Pro Fever in the class because they insist on racing A class week after week. They are both very good riders, but I think they would have more fun running B Class together :D Either way, it is always great seeing them at the races.

Johh Rowling on the otherhand started out last year in the Junior class and had an incredible season and was the class champion! He moved up to A class and had a slow start, but since switching to the Honda and getting the bugs worked out, he has been running extremely well with a 3rd place finish at Rausch Creek and is currently ranked 7th in the class!

Chris Bithell on his 450R has finished 2nd four times this year and had a 16th Overall finish at Steele Creek. Chris is currently runing third in the Points behind Thett Butler and Travis Styles.

Derek Litterini won the last round at Rausch Creek with a 21st Overall, but his best race was also at Steele Creek where he won the race also and finished a season's best 13th Overall.

Junior Class

The Junior Class has really grown from last year when many races only had around 10 entries and now there are typically 20+ entries on the line.

This Year Jared Huffman is leading points with five wins, but he wasn't in attendance for the Patriot. Ryan Wuebbeling and Pete Stadtmueller round out the top three!

The start of the race had Jim Pinkston out front on his Yamaha Raptor and boy was he roosting Ryan on his Vforce.

Pete Stadtmueller didn't have his best race of the season, but he continues to be consistent and finished 10th in the Class.

He has only missed racing one GNCC this year, and he has been a great help in keeping me going this year racing the Stock Class. Thanks Gary for all your help and making race day so much fun:D

Dave went on to finish an amazing 35th overall as a senior, which wasn't even a season's best. Dave is truely and incredible racer and has won every race he entered this season with eight so far!!!

Congratulations to John Cunningham Jr for his second place finish and John Houser who finished third.

Fred has been a great help this year in providing the Morning Race Coverage and please give him Thanks if you see him or any other of the people that make this possible. Marty Eckert, Jeff Stoess, Kenny Hill, Ben Wrightsman, Stephanie Parton, and Brad Whitehead have all helped at one time or another.

With over 30 B riders heading into a single line course around the turn, you are bound to see a pile up!!!

Pileup indeed did occur and I was glad that I moved from my earlier photo spot to capture the action.

Ralph Johnson took the outside line to avoid the pileup.

This rider found his ATV on its side after getting it free from another quad. Then he had to flip it back over without getting run over in the process.

Nathan Aker gave GNCC racing a try on his KFX, but only managed to finish one lap, but atleat he didn't have to drive far since he was from Viriginia. I am sure he will have better luck next time.

Joseph Margarva grabbed the holeshot on his Blaster which was incredible considering many of those 300EX quads are big bores and can fly!
