I got on my 450r for the first time yesterday and tried to crank it. It took me forever to because instead of it going down..I was going up...lol. Will the kick start get any easier to kick over with time or will it stay like this. The guy at the dealership got on it yesterday and started it up no problem on the first kick...He weighs quite a bit more than me though. by about 100 pounds

I found it helps to slowly push down the kicker until you feel a tight spot which is the compression stroke. Then give it one hard kick. This way the very next stroke is when the spark plug fires. They start up much easier. It worked really well on the old 250x's and 350x's. Hope this makes sense.

You'll get used to it. I only weigh 135lbs, and I can start mine sitting on the seat.

The one I ride starts pretty easy. I just do it easy and starts right up.

i heard your not supposed to give it throttle while kicking it over, some guys have had problems with the kickstart lever comin back and smackin thier leg and doin damage to the engine

yeah i give it a little gas but not much. Yes it has smacked me in the leg a couple times but that is just because my foot slipped off...it left a big ole bruise. This is my first kickstart so im still getting used to the cranking procedure.

Heh yeah I only weigh 135 lbs. too. I start it up no prob.. and what they tell you to do is slowly push it down till you feel some compression... come back up and then kick her hard.. Seems to work great for me.

Your trying too hard! All you need to do is just push thru the stroke without too much effort, she will light up. DO NOT use any throttle and use the hot start lever when it is hot. I have also found that they don't like to start right away if you stand it on the grab rail with any fuel in the carb. I have cured this by turning off the gas and letting it run till it quits. This way I can stand it up to work on, or wash, and it will start right away using a cold start procedure. Hope this helps.

Dont give it any throttle. If you have to put both feet on the kickstart and jump on it till it starts but dont touch that throttle unless u want a damaged r:D

Bama don't give it no gas at all...there's no need to.

Try this... when you go to start it slowly go kick the bike once down and then come back up to 3/4 kick then kick it over and it will fire right up.

Also does it have to be in neutral to crank....i used to have a 400ex and im used to cranking it without having to put it into neutral.Keep in mind this is my first kickstart so dont laugh at me:D

no..it can be in any gear...though i dont know if its just my adjustments but it is harder to start when its in gear for me so i just use neutral all the time..

It helps if its in neutral but it does not half to be. And were not going to laugh at you......well maybe a little ;) By the way welcome to EXriders.

it definitly gets easier as time goes and it gets broken in. at the dealer i couldn't even kick it, less start it. i can sit and kick it from halfway now and it's easy. i weigh 125 and it's no problem to sit and kick it, it'll get easier.

yeah, bama
i am from pulaski and go to west point alot. but the 450R does have a good compression and can be hard tp kick but if you get it passed the compression kick then it should start very easily from cold with the choke on and don't give it any gas. it starts for me everytime first kick.

dont kcik it, stand on it and pull on the bars for more weight on your foot and NO GAS. and dont be afraid to choke it or hold hotstart in while kicking

Sorry, maybe a dumb question but i dont have an R. and i was wondering what the hotstart is ? by the sounds of it, its like a electric start once your engine warms up ?

My girl friend cant kick it over because she try’s to kick it straight down and not forward and down. I caught her standing on the kick-starter and I flipped out.
U just have to push forward and down and don’t try to hard U don’t have to,

And when U are in gear the clutch has to be in or its real hard to kick and will never start…..
