the oil is what prevents dirt from entering the engine, the foam just holds the oil

Better put it back on. Don't use motor oil to oil it either, dummies do that. Use PJ1 Foam Air Filter Oil,It's red, stinky, and really sticky and messy to put on but it works.

what are the bad things about using motor oil? i didnt think it was a problem, but i still used foam oil cause i put it on when it was at a friends house and he had some

Well it's not so much that it's bad for using motor oil,,but they make products designed for foam filters,,just like they make lawn mowers to cut grass,,instead of using scissors..

Motor oil is a lubricant, air filter oil is not a lubricant. Air filter oil is more of a "glue". Its super tacky. The "glue" is sticky and it traps particles that pass through the foam. Regular motor oil when in the filter element begins to sink to the bottom of the filter and you get dry spots. You must remember that your bike is constantly vibrating and going over bumps. The motor oil shakes and vibrates loose and settles at the bottom. And the valves are constantly pumping on it,sucking in air,so it gets dry fast. Motor oil is thick, but not tacky. The air filter oil sticks well and stays put,and filters out dirt about 85% better than average 30 weight motor oil. Your not doing your motor a favor oiling it with motor oil,its like a person who smokes, its wears on it eventually and it dies. Oil it with PJ1 Foam Air Filter oil.

is it ok to use the k&n air filter oil on stock filter?

also can you use the cleaner from k&n to clean it?

Don't use K&N cleaner or the oil on a foam filter. It is not designed for use on foam. Don't be cheap. Get the right oil and your quad will be much better for it. NO-TOIL makes a great cleaner and oil for foam filters and is cheap to buy. do it right or just don't do it at all.............

There was an article a few months back in dirt wheels about filters and filter oil. But you should always use filter oil. It takes only a small amount of grit to really put a hurting on a single cylinder engine. I don't even crank mine with out the filter on it!
