It's for my Girlfriend so it NEEDS to have electric start and reverse. I'm a loyal Honda guy but the white Z is real nice. It will be used for Trails, XC, and some MX. Either one will have +1 a-arms. XC setup with an adjustable axle. The 300ex motor will be worked to 350cc. But the Z would just have Pipe, jets, and filter. she has already out grown my 300ex so we need to go bigger. I will not get anything else besides these two. I already have the 300ex motor and electronics so I would just need a 400ex rolling chassis.

What do you guys think?

just go ahead and buy a Z. the $$$ you use to modify the 400ex frame to accept the engine of either machine can go toward other things.

she isn't going to be going crazy on the bike, so the frame will be a non-issue.

brand loyalty is BS. buy and use what works well for the task.

I dunno what your girlfriend weighs but I'd be surprised if she weighed enough to crack the frame doing any riding on a stock z400. Like everyone is saying, pick up a nice used z400 for $4000 or less and be happy with it.

Well I like honda, & I like trying motor swaps etc. If you want reliability I would go with the z400. It has electric start, reverse, liquid cooled, etc.... I know you mentioned leaving it mostly stock except for a pipe, & I would definately rejet it. You might want to upgrade in the future, & the Z has many aftermarket parts out there. some shocks would be a good investment. You then could sell the 300ex motor & parts etc...
