well it depends really...age really dosn't matter it the abilitly to handle the machine..Ide have to say that if you have been rideing for a while and can use the clutch and you have the whole balence thing figured out then you should be fine.. i know alot guys that have bought thier son's 400ex's when they were around the 11-13 year range. If your storng and can hanle yourself and you know how to ride ide say go for it and get 1..Dealers will tell you you cant hanlde it or your to young to ride it but they have to say thatb/c it the rules...i tihk its you have to be 16 or older to ride anything over 90cc at leats it is where i live.
but you should be able to handle it if youve rode before..there not all that fast as compared to other machines these daz...l8er
im 13 and can handle my bros perfectly fine they're not that fast

has absolutely nothing to do w/ age.
has everything to do with riders abilities, experience and MOST of all.. responsibility..
people usually get hurt on quads if they are being irresponsible and trying things they shouldnt be doing

I disagree. I think you should at least be old enough to change your own diaper, or you could get lost in the woods and come out stuck to the seat:eek: Not a pretty picture.:p

I got my z400 when I was 12..And I had a rancher b4 that. Soon after I got it I was wanting more power...
i rode and handled my uncles 400 fine when i was 11 and was even able to jump it 132 ft at 11 and it had a fmf pipe k&n filter and other mods and now im 13 and have a worked 350x which is basicly the same motor as the 400ex when there both stock except the 400ex's power hits smoother where as the 350x hits harder

It also has to do with the terrain you are dealing with. Many kids couldn't drive a shee on trails but would do just fine out on the dunes.;)

Age has nothing to do with ability. I dont like the age limits the factories put on quads because that restricts age limits for a lot of races. Thats why i am on bikes, because a 12 year old can race a 125 in any AMA competition. The bad thing is the factories do that to cover their @sses in lawsuits and stuff. BUT ya get a 16 year old never rode once in his life, goes and buys a new 450 or something and crashes and burns. Go by ability and size of the rider. Not age.

one of my cousins was doing better wheelies than me when he was 11. him and his brother grew up on quads, his bro is 18 and learned to ride on an lt250r when he was 4. he could wheelie an ex for miles on end if he had the room.
i just turned 14 and i can out wheelie my brother(who is 16). he had his quad for a month and a half i had mine for 3 weeks. i can wheelies for probably a mile right now. but now im just practising no footer wheelies one handers no handers just cool chit to impress the ladies:macho

I'm 14. I ride the quad in my sig. I just switched to quads from my full works RM125 fully built by pro circuit. I've been riding a while. Quads are easier to handle then a bike.

I'm 16, currently riding a full drag port 86' 250r. Before that I when I was 13-14 i was riding 400ex's, z400's, atc250r, 300ex, etc.. I've say im a pretty experianced rider, been riding since I was 4-5.
One thing I see a lot of teenagers (13-14) doing is getting on quads such as 300ex's, etc.. and wanting to move up to a larger more powerful quad Just because they want to go as fast as the older guys, even when they are not fully experianced enough with the quad. I've seen people move their kids from an lt80 to a 400ex, this is what gets people killed, Yes they may be able to ride the bike, but when they are in fear of hitting something they won't be able to properly control the bike. The biggest thing I hate is when I see a teen at my age that only wants to go the fastest, or jump the biggest.. and has to be the BEST at every thing, and ends up with something broken at the end of the day.. very stupid. Ride smart, Ride safe!

My view is a little different than most other peoples. Currently, I am only 15, and I still feel like I am growing into my 400. I am 5'7" right now, and I still feel a tad small for the 400ex. IMHO, It not only depends on rider skill, but size, strength, and also, confiedence. I've been riding since I was 7. Started out on a honda 110 atc. Rode the piss out of it. When I was 13 I got a my 225dr. It was a big step up from the 110, but after a year I got more confident. In june, I got my 400. I was a HUGE step up from my 3 wheelers. It had 4 wheels, and much more power. I don't believe people should be putting their kids on these ridiculously huge quads. Its not funny when somone gets seriously hurt or killed. I think that you should be over 5 ft if you want to ride a 400ex. Any smaller, and it could over power you. Also, you should have a lot of seat time on a smaller, similar quad. This will aid in the step up, and thus, prevent accidents. You should comfortably fit the quad, not streching out to reach the bars. You should also be able to turn the bars from lock to lock with ease, and pull in the clutch/ front brake from any angle the bars may be in. Finally, you need the confidence to ride on most terrains, because you never know what you could get yourself into. My parents set up a rule for me, adn taht was that if I couldn't lift each end on the machine, I couldn't ride it. The 400 has no reverse, so If you stall, or get caught in a hole, you need the strength to get back out. On last thing. Never be over confident. Trust me, I've tried. You think you can do this and that, jump this, and jump that, Go this fast over whoops (Please slow down unless you are extremely experienced!). Being over confident will only get you into more trouble, and culd lead to a serious injury or even a death. I had a friend that almost got killed on a Warrior whe he was 11 because he thought he was all that, going 60+, and sliding. Slid off the road, and bit it hard. It's not my choice what you do, just take it in consideration.;)
Oh yeah, I don't really care if you can wheelie or do stunts better than somone else. That proves nothing. BTW, some of you are too tall! lol
Im 15 i jus sold my 250ex and im going to pick up a used 400ex i jus purchased with some stuff on it ive ridden all the new 450s and all the 400s i jus feal more comfortable on a honda. im like 5'3 so im a lil smaller but like a kid said up there u can grow into it the 250 jus didnt have enough power for me anymore. ill post pics later of my 400 after i get it

My grandson has been riding a 400ex since he was 12. Now at 14 he can really ride it well. He started out on a LT80 when he was 8, then moved up to a 300ex at 11.

I'm 15, 5'10" 165. I ride a 250ex, about a year ago I was looking at getting something bigger, but I've started mastering to 250ex in other things, like driving on the 2 side wheels, power slides, etc. To get to the point, there is many diffrent ways to use a quad, fine something that you can do SAFELY and good and practice it, I ride with shee's, LT500s, 400's and they all are faster and can jump higher but I can power slide further then any of the other guys and I can usually make it around the mx track faster since ours is small so top speed isn't a issue. In the end ride what is safe and fun.

I started on some that had 235cc when I was around 10 or 11. Soon after that I moved to a blaster. That didnt last very long then I switched to my dads warrior. Finally I got my DVX. I am 15. I have rode alot of different quads: 250r, a raptor, yfz450, 250ex, trail boss, and many others that I cant even think of, But once you are responisible enough people will trust you on their quads and you can ride expensive ones to. Alot of the quads up there arent or werent stock when I rode them. As long as when you move to a different quad, you get use to it first you should have a problem riding it. Expereince is deffinetly everything!!!!
SORRY FOR BRINGING THIS POST UP AGAIN I DIDNT SEE HOW OLD IT WAS.
