View Full Version : 8 plate clutch kit

03-25-2002, 07:13 AM
Hey everyone I just put in a complete Hinson 8 plate clutch kit for my 400. It uses stock 250R plates and fibers. They are thinner than the 400EX. Is this what the others places are calling their upgrade. I love my setup, but could I have saved a lot of money just buying the 250R plates and fibers? Just wandered what you think.

What all Comes in the Kit?

03-25-2002, 08:43 AM
The Hinson set up requires the purchase of a Hinson basket, inner hub and pressure plate. It is expensive. The basket is about $200, pressure plate and inner hub $400. Then you spend about $120 for the fibers and plates. It is supposed to be the best. Baldwins said the use it in their machines. I haven't really had a good chance to try it out yet. Only time will tell.

That`s what my Brother has on his 250r. It is Sweet. That is by far the Best Setup. Did you get it from Baldwin?

03-25-2002, 09:07 AM
NO I bought the basket from Rocky Mountain ATV. It was the cheapest. I believe it is $189. I bought the others in one set from NAC's. It was just over $400. Baldwins does carry it, but you might be able to find it somewhere cheaper. Just look on the net.

Where did you get the 250r Plates and Fibers? I think I want a Setup like this when I Mod my Motor.

As far as I know you can't just throw in 250R plates into a stock basket.

Places like GT Thunder offer an 8 plate kit using OEM parts, but they have done some machine work to the inner basket to make it all work. They sell their complete kit for just over $200 which includes new plates, the machined basket, and springs.

Seems like there are others doing 8-plate kits using XR250 fibers & steels and maybe some sort of spacer setup, but I've not been able to verify the exact requirements pertaining to the spacer.

Gabe, He got the Complete Hinson 8 Plate Setup. I just wanted to know what everything Costed. I think I`m going to go with the Clutch Setup ChadEXer is getting from TC. It sounds Good and is not as Expensive as the others.

Yep, but I'm getting ready to do the GT Thunder 8 plate conversion & have been studying up on my options - my stock clutch is finally starting to lose it's crispness...

8 new fiber plates
7 new steel plates
new springs
new inner hub with machine work done

I'm just going to use the stock basket for now if it's not worn...

If I do my Clutch I just want to go ahead and get a Hinson Basket.

GT Thunder 8 plate conversion kit. Note that GT recommends replacing basket once a year. http://www.geocities.com/~gtthunder/cat6set.html

If you are going to do the Hinson basket, then just do their 8 plate setup....

TC has his own Clutch Setup that he uses a Hinson Basket for. I think that`s what I want to do.

It adds an Extra Friction and Metal Plate. So instead of the Stock 7 Friction Plates and 6 Metal Plates, you would now have 8 Friction Plates and 7 Metal Plates.

YOu get the power your lookin for quicker I guess you could say,,the clutch pull seems a little stiffer,,but the bike feels like it's getting the power delivery to the wheels quicker,,no clutch slippage I guess you could say,,,the clutch feels like it's engaging faster, smoother, and delivers the power sooner..There's no doubt I'll be goin with a 8 plate setup when it's time...

Don't know yet,,,hinson products are sweet,,but the price on the GT thunder setup looks a little more pleasing to my bank account.

Dave400ex

Yes Hinson Stuff is very Expensive, but you get the Best there is. It`s just like with Walsh. It`s the Most Expensive, but you are getting the Best. I think Tom`s Setup will be very Good. I will let you know on the TC Stuff Friday.

Cool. I cant believe he was there so late last night. His machine says he closes at like 5. he was still there at 8!!

03-29-2002, 08:56 AM
Chad I'm pretty dang positive Tom will be hooking you up with the 8 plate kit,,he did my buddies national motor,,so I'm sure he'll be doing it to yours also..and it was all hinson,,of course.

Dave400ex

Chad, I called last night at 5:30 and he didn`t Answer. Maybe he was Working on your Motor. LOL.

Rico, I hope to Find out for sure Today.

03-29-2002, 10:53 AM
I'm pretty positive he'll upgrade the clutch too,,especially for the amount of money chad's dishin out..

I know one thing,,,I got a brand new Bill thunder pipe sittin here on my desk,,and it'll be 5 hours before I can put it on..:( It's killin me..nice lookin pipe though..:D

Dave400ex
03-29-2002, 10:58 AM
Rico, Chad knows TC is doing the Clutch, but he is not sure what all TC is doing. That`s what I want to Find out.

Let us know how the Pipe Works.

ChadEXer
03-29-2002, 06:17 PM
Yeah i forgot AGAIN to ask him about the clutch. i remember him saying something about hinson now that you say that because i told him that I had already bought a Hinson basket and he told me to ship it to him and i did. All Hinson would be awesome!!! But like Rico says. For all that $$$ it should be the best!! But in al honesty Tom is the cheapest. he is doing the 505 for $2500 plus another $300 for his pipe. thats is including carb and clutch and everything. FST wanted the same price with no carb or pipe!!

Dave400ex
03-29-2002, 08:50 PM
Well I`m sure the Clutch will be Good no matter what Tom does. I just want to know what he does. Tom is a little Cheaper then some of the other Builders.

ChadEXer
04-02-2002, 08:29 AM
He is definately cheaper than the others!

Dave400ex
04-02-2002, 09:20 AM
Yeah. The Clutch depends on how much HorsePower you have. He said up to 35HP I could run the Stock Clutch. Tom said any More HP then that you would want to get a Hinson Basket, New Stock Plates, and Heavy Duty Springs. I think for Chad`s 505 it will be the Complete Hinson Setup.
