yesterday i went riding and we had to cross a stream.....one grizzley 660 did it but the other sportsman 500 wouldnt....so i thought id go fo it on the 450r....well i go down the path into the stream and i drop into a whole 5 or more feet deep....well i found out that the stream is more then 5 foot deep and fast running water.....so the 450r starts floating and since the tires cant touch the ground so i start floating down streem when the tires start spinning and are used to propelle me across the stream.....but that just amazed me that the 450r a sport quad could cross a stream that deep

um like 5 in the back 4 in the front and if anyone knows paragon ap its the stream crossing right at the end of that mud pit where you can only go right not left.....and i swear to god...it came over the seat and started floating

and also its all stock except for full body skid plate and 13tooth front sprocket which im going to change to a 12

sounds like you abuse your 450r...dont be mad at honda when something blows up ont it b/c the engine isnt designed to be fully submerged pass the airbox & all, its designed to be on a track but can be used on trails..if the engine is hot & you do this it will cause some serious wear & tear...

My friend and I both have 450rs, we shut our engines off and got pulled through a river with water over the seat, (we had no choice but to go that way), my friends had water all in the trans oil and it started boiling and spewed out of the engine. I ignored mine until i got home, when i checked my tran oil it was milky white. If i were you i would check my oil, i bet it is full of water.

By the way, mine floated , too.

Quads will float, at least ones under 400lbs. I was on a Cannondale Cannibal and crossed the Passaic river in NJ. It was about 4 feet deep and 40 feet to cross. A guy on a Z400 did it first, he got off and left the motor running in nuetral and walked the quad across. When the water gets to a certain point it will float a little. But ATVrider, what's so amazing here? I thought you were going to say you cleared an 80 foot double or something!

uh they will run with water in the engine. if you must cross deep water and drowned out or get water in the engine here is something you can do. take the oil plug out and watch for the water to stop coming out. when the oil starts flowing quickly stick it back in. this will not get all the water out but it will be better than letting it all mix together. oh yea this aint in no way better than a tow and it sure as hell aint healthy to the motor, but if you want to take the risk go for it. ive done it plenty of times but it was on a beater. and your gonna have to change your oil several times. so i wouldnt use any expensive oil till you know you have all the milk out.

It's good that you made it,water can be disasterous,
but I have no doubt they would float.
My 600lb+Grizzly with 27s with float without me on it (found that out the hard way).
I just have no reason to ride my 450 in that way.

I rode through several creeks about 2 to 3 feet deep. “Half way up the radiator and about 2 in down form the end of the pipe opening” I did not get any water in the oil or stock air box thank God!!

Its real fun in water that deep when u get high centered on rock, you can shoot water 20 feet in the air and get all wet!!!

I survived a 6hour xcountry race last weekend and we raced against the bikes on a 14mile trackon private farm land. We crossed lots of rivers 2-3ft deep aand I had no problems but the bikes, a lot of them drowned and they had trouble getting them going again & some would not go at all?
I finished 2nd quad & 14th overall, so it was agood day but the weather was atrocious.:eek2:

You see what happens when a 15 year old owns a nice quad....he goes and tries to drown it. All I can say is don't cry if you brake it.:eek2:

Full potential doesn't mean you ride it in water. I think you were better off on a blaster!

LOL My friend has and old yamaha moto 4, 200cc's no shocks and balloon (sp) tires, he drove that through a area of a pond that he thought was shallow, it was about 4 ft deep. Well once he lost traction he noticed that it was floating. He put it in gear and was putting around the pond, it was awsome, and nothing's ever gone wrong with that quad, even since he got it in like 84 or how ever old that thing is.

Another fun thing to do is hit a 3 inch puddle on a large grassy paddock that is at least 20feet accross, in top gear and try to get across without spinning completely around in circles?
Oh what fun!
