If i plan on studding my tires and using my 400ex on the ice is it worth it to get a 16 tooth front because it seems like the 400ex is pretty limited with top speeds. Do you loose alot of low end power?

Never tried a 16 but I'm told that you either have to grind the stock case saver or buy an aftermarket one that accepts a 16 t to make it work...

16T uses no case saver. Its to big for any case saver to work. The thing about gearing is that you have to think about the track i.e. is it a short ice track or a long ice track, TT style corners, or oval. It all plays into gearing. If its an oval then run like a 16/36 for the most top speed you can get, but if its TT style then run like 15/40 or something like that.

the higher gearing is nice on these bikes. you CAN buy an aftermarket case saver to fit a 16 tooth front. however, i just grinded down my case saver and it fit fine. actually i have a 16 tooth renthal that i am selling if you want it. i actually just have a smaller rear sprocket on now which does the same thing as a larger front so i don't need the 16 and it is just sitting here. if you want it let me know. when coming out of a tight corner you will notice the 16 won't have quite as much. however, if your not in any really tight areas, i prefer the higher gearing all the time.

I was thinking about getting a 16 tooth too. Do you need a bigger chain, or anything else?

stock chain works just fine with this sprocket. you just need to adjust your chain a bit. you will want to grind a bit off the stock case saver for proper fit, or buy an aftermarket case saver.
