I took my 300ex to our local MX practice track the other day for the first time. I was hitting some pretty big jumps and the stock suspension was not liking it at all. I was botteming out the suspension alot!! I do mostly trail riding but an occasional trip to the MX track would be fun. Anyway I need to do something about the suspension, the front end for sure. Could I get away with entry level works shocks? I need something that will take some big jumps but still be trail friendly. I do not race and I never plan to. If I could get some advice I would relly appreciate it. I always thought that the stock suspension would be good enough for the recreational riding I do. Man was I wrong. If I could get some advice it would be really appreciated. Thank you!!!

yes works shocks will be fine for trail and mx. I ran works on my 250x and raced mx and they were fine and very good on the trails.

If your a good rider 250x/300ex works shocks will beat the chit outta you. I use to have some and i didn't find a lot of improvement over stock.

Get some Elka's or buy the 400ex relocator and you will be much happier in the long run. You will like your works for a few day's, then after you ride them awhile you will want better shocks.

i had a 300 for 2 weeks and sold it due to lack of power. bought 400 and rode it for 8 months ; once on mx track and it beat the piss out of me. now i have the 450r and while the suspension is light years ahead of the 400 it still needs more for the mx riding. the jumps at our track are 40 ft tables,40ft doubles, 65ft tables, 65ft doubles, and a 85ft table. if you make the jump and land on the down side of ramp its great, but if you come up short on a table its a little rough, if you case a double it hurts.
so my recomendation is that mx is addicting , the better you get the more you like it so buy elkas or hit smaller jumps.
i know their expensive but worth it. try to get a used set of ebay and have them revalved for your weight.

my works arent valved at all for me, so i think they suck.. they are really stiff and beat the hell outta me. but i'll be sending them to Derisi Racing probably this winter to have them worked on :D

Yep. I think my Elka economy's were around $525. Mine are made for Burgard 300ex +2's with a shockmount bracket. It's basically like a long travel setup. I got the idea from Dave McCarrol's(sp?) 300ex. Much better than stock:devil:

Almost forgot. You can do this setup with stock a arms also as long as you have the shocks set up properly. Just let the builder know what parts you are using and they will have you fill out a build sheet for the shocks.
