I've got a 465 stroker that is smoking when I first crank it up. What might be the cause of that? I just had the cylinder cleaned up and put a new JE 13 to 1 piston in.

Valve seals are notorious for leaking on built ex motors.

yup perfectly normal mine always smokes on startup, i replaced the valve seals and it only fixed the problem for a month, but it's nothing to worry about

Burning a little oil never hurts, *little* not smoking like a freight train. It is actually probly better for a motor to have leaky valve seals, that way your piston has plenty of oil on it when you first start it up. It'll probly make it last longer since about 70% of engine wear is said to occur at startup. What do yall think?

rings and piston seal better after the motors warm.

Shouldnt hurt it. My 465 will smoke if I am stupid and rev it just after start up, but its only a puff, like the packing burning out of a new pipe. After its warm it goes away.

A short spell of light blue smoke is normal. Like UglyMotha said, replacing the seals will usually fix it for a while and then it will start again.

I got a 440 stroker kit on mine, and it smoked badly too. It took 500 miles of trail riding to break in the engine, and it doesn't smoke anymore! Not even at start up.

No more smoke, running good.

The first tank of gas through it I ran non-detergent straight 30 weight oil. After that I ran red cap Mobil 1 15w-50. Maybe I ran synthetic too soon, and the rings and stuff didn't break in right away? I also babied it quite a bit during the 500 miles. Then I ice raced the bike during the last 10 of those 500 miles, and it ate oil for the first 2 races, then it was ok (I changed oil each weekend). I rode it much harder ice racing, so maybe that helped?.

Now the only time it burns oil is when I go slow in hot weather. I think it is overheating?! If I run fast all day when its hot out, I don't burn oil. So maybe gotta get a big fin head or something.

Honestly I guess the rings didn't seat right away. I made up my mind I was going to ride it till it blew or something went wrong. I had been having so many problems before I had just about gave up on the motor. I'm glad I didn't, it's running great. I swapped it(motor) and put it in my MX quad and it is awsome.
