Is there truth to the bigger carb spec. on the 2004 400ex's? Some say it is true, others say it is a misprint.

Here are the 2004 specs:

Engine Type 397cc RFVC air-cooled dry-sump single-cylinder four-stroke

Bore and Stroke 85.0mm x 70.0mm

Carburetion 38mm piston-valve with accelerator pump

Ignition Solid-state CD with electronic advance

Starter Electric

Up until now, they were always 35.5mm carbs.

i dont see how you can misprint 38 when the original carb was 35.5..i believe that it is a bigger carb, but who knows

You're right, that would be one hell of a typo.

However, Honda lists it as 38mm this year on everything I've seen. You can even look at '03 vs. '04 on their site and it notes the difference. I've been out of the game for too long to know if it's actually different.

they're talkin about the 400ex, the 300ex should be pretty much the same as 03, i dont think anything changed on it, besides decals

I looked in my service manual that was printed in 2002 . And it has the carbureturs throttle bore listed at 38mm. The part number hasnt changed any either i'm pretty certain its the same carbas previous years.

In my Honda manual----Date of issue September 1998

It lists the throttle bore as 38mm (1.5 in)

I'm not certain, but I think this may be the interior measurement of the carb on the end where it mounts to the intake manifold.

???Maybe the 35.5mm is the typo and the 38mm is correct for all models.
