im fixing to sell my warrior for a 400ex and im wondering if the kick-starter off an xr400 will work on a 400ex, the reason im wondering is because all the problems im having with my warrior are electrical, i would like to do away with all of the electric stuff that i can

I believe the price is around $800 to do the conversion. You won't have the problems on the 400ex..

i beg to differ, i belive that the electrical system around the battery/starter solenoid area is weak, 3 times ive been stranded due to problems in this area...i keep my bike maintained and everything clean...1st time it was the solenoid arcing to itself, 2nd time same thing, 3rd time bad battery ( i think, the new one is charging now so we'll soon find out) though $800 for a kickstart is very high, nothing wrong with putter er' in 2nd and bump starting it....ive been down that road many times...haha

realability of the electric start is one one the reasons I got rid of my warrior, its left me twice, both times i got a pull start. I got a 250r and I won't buy a electric start bike

Funny, I've never had any electrical problems on my 400ex at all. In fact, the only reason I didn't go out and buy the new 450r is because it doesn't have electric start.

How makes the $800 dollar conversion for the 400ex............

what makes it $800? so most of you are saying that i wont have electrical problems with an ex? thats good hahaha, is there any problems with a 99 model, since its first-year production?

400exs never had any major problems or recalls except for some brake pads being installed wrong from the factory.

the stock tires are easy to pop but thats about it

yeah if everything is still in good shape around here theres alot of junkie 400ex's that have seen better days..

i had electrial trouble with mine also a some bearing troubles in my 400ex..

but if it makes your feel better a boy got a 99 400ex and he has changed his oil maybe 8 times and rides daily.. he abuses that bike and has no problems..

Hehe,
I have to laugh at all these yama riders. They come on a Honda site, (why?) and rag on Hondas! If you want the truth, go to Pismo beach and ask the quad rental places why none of them rent Yamahas? The reason, sub standard frames and sub standard bikes. CASE CLOSED!:macho

Back when the 400EX came out in 99 they had a couple of problems with the starter but, unlike yamahahaha, the fixed it the year it came out. The resualt, no more problems.

I bought my 400 in the fall of 98. Nothing electrical has ever failed. I am very impressed with the solenoid and starter in my 400 after I completed a 60 min plus xc lap with a broken clutch, I must have killed the thing 100 times or better and had to start it in gear over and over and ................ Still works great.

theres a lot of questions on this kick start stuff, has anyone actually done it? isnt the xr motor a direct bolt in, into the 400ex frame, so wouldnt it just be easier to buy an XR400 bottom end or complete motor and just swap it?

I know there are a couple things that get in the way. I believe the frame, and the plastic (can be cut)

But if anyone figures it out I would love to know.

And yes, I am almost positive someone on here did this a couple years ago.

if it gets in the way of the frame u could notch it. Or you could wled and extension on that makes it go up and out. And like you said u can cut the plastic.

Somebody should do this.

It has been discussed here for over 2 years and no body has followed through.

I think I read a thread here that told exactly what needs to be done to install a kickstarter, starting with the xr case cover that has the hole for the kicker. But do a search and I think you can find a detailed explanation.

For what it's worth, I have a 99, and have had 0 problems with it, electrical or otherwise.
