250 R Firing Problem

I have a 86 250R . New Stator, All conections are clean including flywheel and pick up coil. The only way you can get any fire out of it is if you put something very small on the pick up part of the pick up coil and allow it to touch the flywheel while kicking the engine over. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

it could be possible that the flywheel lost its magnetic properties, but it isnt very common....it can happen though if say someone drops it on the floor or gives it a nice hard shock.
